I want to use the same external drive for a master catalog and smart previews, with originals on a server at home. On the road I work on smart previews and add new originals. At home connect same drive to server to update existing originals. The external drive with catalog and smart previews is cloned at home for backup. Any problem with this? What is the best way to move the new originals, from travel, to the home server? Just move them in LR? Thanks!
Sounds like a reasonable setup.
For moving the new original files, "best" would probably depend on the number of files to move. Internally LR does OK with moving a small number of files. However, for large numbers of files, it is usually better to use Finder/Explorer to move the files then "relocate/find-missing" on the moved folders inside LR.
Thanks, MJ. It was very slow moving them within LR, I'll do the relocate next time.
Remember, when you move files from one drive to another in LR (all versions) it erases the original drive they were on so there is no way to go back and check that the original drive matches the newly moved images. Thus what ManiiacJoe suggested is the safest way to move your images.
