Lego stop motion with Adobe After effects

So in Photoshop you rasterize the layer. Basically what I want, for example is to take a picture without anything. Just the backround basically. Then add the lego guy, standing on a brick. Then erase the brick. So he is floating in the air. Another example is taking a picture of a table. Then putting a book on the tale, with an orange on top. Then erase the book (after rasterizing) and now the orange is floating. That is what you can do in photoshop. Can you do it in After Effects? If not then I may have to buy both, and I hope I don't need to. With this you can make legos fly, etc.

      Please help!
