I am working on a file that I have copy and pasted from an RTF file. It has been converted to another language and I am using that language in indesign but when I either copy or paste or import/place the file I am seeing boxes with X's inside that are highlighted before certain punctuation. (See Image.) This document is going to publication, but I'm worried if I just delete the boxes they will show up when processed for publication. How do I get rid of the boxes permanently or what do I transform them into so that they don't show up when going to publication? I've never come across this problem before so any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
These boxes indicate the use of glyphs which are not available in the selected font. You have to find a font which supports these glyphs. You will have to compare it with the original document.
Other programs are often using the glyph of another font automatically if it is missing, but InDesign does not do it, because this method would cause problems during print. The pink marking indicates that a problem with missing glyphs is here.
