Hi, I read through and tried those tips before I posted.
If you empty the recovery folder you should not be getting a prompt and you should be able to open ID normally. At that point you may be able to use File > Open to access the last saved version of your file. If it doesn't work, most likley the file crashed while it was trying to write to disk.
I hear you, I trashed the recover folder and it still happens. The dialog box appears 2 seconds before the crash BTW.
You may be on to something, where are the unlikely places auto-recover files are kept...?
I've done a system-wide search (including invisibles) and trashed everything that references indesign.
The recovery folder is in your user library caches section on mac, or your user profile in the Local tree on PC (I think the default locations are listed in the link), unless you moved it through editing your preferences, in which case it could be anywhere. That folder, though, is the only place auto-recovery info would be stored. Deleting other things willy nilly is not likely to be helpful.
What happens if you create and log on to your computer with a new user account and try to launch ID, then open that file? That will tell us a lot about where the problem is.
I zapped that folder and the next time round the recovery data file as per Adobe Help instructions.
Will sign up a new used and share....
I created a new user and ID now works under that profile.
OK, that means the InDesign folders in your original user's user library/user profile (what is the OS?) are damaged. Reboot in the original user, and try trashing the prefs (see Replace Your Preferences). If that doesn't work, rename the TWO Folders to InDesign.old and try launching again.
These folders are hidden by default. You'll find how to access them on Mac at Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later
I have "Tinkertool" so I am able to view all (invisible) system files.
I deleted all preferences to indesign.
I also wiped every reference to InDesign
Finder content search: 'InDesign' and deleted everything in the user library.
I will also try to rename the folders.
I also deleted the folder with the autosave/recover data
I will try that again and let you know.
