Premiere Elements 14 (whenever its release is complete globally) is a standalone product. It should contain the Premiere Elements 14 Editor and the Elements Organizer 14 and all the features that Adobe wanted in it (new and old for 14). It should have nothing to do with the performance of Premiere Elements 13/13.1. There is no guarantee that your favorite features of 13 will not have been removed in 14.
What are the Premiere Element 13/13.1 signs and symptoms pointing you to believing that the program is corrupt? What are those few critical ways to which you refer? What computer operating system are you using now?
Under the circumstances, consider the 14 tryout before purchase. Consider it a troubleshooting tool
a. if 14 works and 13 does not, then 13 has the problem
b. if 14 and 13 do not work, then the computer is your target for troubleshooting.
Looking forward to more details
Hi A.T. - It's Bill North again. What I think it corrupted about my PE 13 program are the following:
- I could never get the default keyboard shortcuts to work
- As we discussed, I cannot add media to my expert timeline as I should. When I do it, it asks for sign-on information or says it cannot get basic info. So, as we worked out a "word around",
I go back to the Elements program, select what I want to add, click on Edit in Premier Elements Editor, and it says it will add it to the END of the expert timeline. But it doesn't. It adds it to the END of Project Assets from which I add it to the timeline where I want it. It is easy to do, but not the way it is supposed to work.
- The latest problem - and the one which "broke my back" - is when I am burning a DVD, I get it all set up with a disc in the tray, and it begins decoding media, then it begins "compiling media", but when it gets to 98% complete, the program freezes. When I cancel the burning, the entire program crashes. Now what is very odd is, I added a Blu-ray burner to my computer; when I set it up to burn a Blu-ray, it decodes and compiles my project just fine and makes a very nice Blu-ray disc. Have done it a few times. Have tried to burn a regular DVD several times, and it only worked ONCE ! Have taken my computer to my computer guy; he says there is plenty of memory (8 GB) and in Task Manager Performance, it shows it is using only about 6 of the 8 GB memory, but the i7 CPU often shows 100% usage. Computer guy suggested disabling ALL features of my fancy Norton program. I did disable everything for an hour, tried it again, noticed less memory usage (less than 4 GB), but still up to 100% CPU usage. And I tried burning another disc in PE13, and it still hung up at the 98% compiling stage. (I am using Windows 7)
I will start with default keyboard shortcuts...all or just a certain few...knowing which ones, I will try to figure out a way to get them to work for you.
Back to Add Media to the Premiere Elements project....
a. Are you saying that Expert workspace Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets will not get a file from the hard drive imported into your project?
If yes, where specifically is the file stored on the hard drive, and is the problem for imports of video or still or both? Have you done the deletion of the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file recently?
Local Disk C
and in the 13.0 Folder is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 13.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Remember to have Folder Options Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives enabled so that you can see the complete path cited. Has Expert workspace Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets ever worked for you (even once or twice) recently with new project?
Instead of Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets, what happens if you cascade the computer windows and drag and drop the file from the hard drive location into the Premiere Elements Expert workspace monitor or video track? Have we talked about that before?
When you mentioned being asked to sign on, is that the program asking you for your Adobe ID and password as you are trying to import a file from the hard drive, using the Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets.
As for the burn to disc...have you been working with the preference "Use Hardware Acceleration (works on Intel HD Graphics 2000 and higher)" with or without check mark next to it? What is your video card/graphics card? Have you inspected the Timeline content for irregularities in placement of titles, transitions, etc?
What is the Space Required and Bitrate for this burn to disc DVD for DVD-VIDEO Widescreen on DVD disc?
Let us go through the above and rule those comments in or out of the issues.
Thanks. Do not give up.
As a start, concerning keyboard shortcuts, the only one I was interested in was the one that would take the CTI all the way to the end of the timeline - - or another one that would take it all the way to the beginning of the timeline. I think I saw them somewhere in Help as a TIP in moving around the timeline. It was either alt-end, or shift-end, or ctrl-end. I just looked in customized keyboard shortcuts and in Help again. Could not find anything about moving all the way to the beginning or end of the timeline. Did I dream these one up. I do use the split clip shortcut regularly and successfully (Ctrl-K).
Now, parenthetically, I am looking after an elderly neighbor who is just home from the hospital. My time for working on the computer is spotty at best. So, if I don't get back to you right away, that's my excuse. My computer time should improve soon; have help for me and her coming. Thanks . . . I'll get to the other parts of your last answer as I can. I appreciate your help as always. Bill
To get to the end of the Timeline content, hit the computer End key.
To get to the beginning of the Timeline 00;00;00;00, then hit the computer Home Key.
(If the Timeline Indicator does not move when you hit these keys, click anywhere in a blank area of a track, and then hit the End of Home Key.)
Just in case you need more Premiere Elements 13/13.1 keyboard shortcuts
We will get to the rest as your time permits.
Wonderful that you are a good neighbor to your neighbor. Best wishes to the neighbor for gaining strength and recovery.
Thank you on behalf of my neighbor.
Thank you for the tip on getting to the end (and beginning) of the timeline. It works! And as to my other keystroke shortcut problems, I think it was largely a misreading or misunderstanding some terms. For example, I was trying to go to the next KEYFRAME marker, but I was using the next TIMELINE marker. That doesn't work. Sorry, my error.
Going to skip my problems with adding media for now since that is finished, and we worked out a very usable "workaround" for it. I am at the point of needing to make a burn of my DVD - which I can't do as I explained - because it hangs up at the 98% mark of "compiling media" . As to what you asked me in your last reply, here are the answers:
- The "Use Hardware Acceleration" IS checked.
- My video card is EVGA GT40
- Not sure what you mean by "check the timeline for irregularities in placement of titles, transitions, etc. I have "rendered" the project, and it plays fine when I play it back on the computer, and, as I said, it will make Blu-ray discs just fine, but not the regular DVD's except for ONCE. And the "once" occurred after I gave up trying for a few days, and knowing computers sometimes "fix" themselves when you turn them back on, I tried it again. It worked. I thought I was out of the woods. Tried it again - - same old hangup at the 98% mark of "compiling media"..
Should I try UNchecking Hardware Acceleration? I think I will while I go do something else for a while. Bill
I do not remember what video card/graphics card that your computer uses. But, if it is not Intel HD Graphics 2000 and higher, then please remove the check mark next to the preference "Use Hardware Acceleration (works on Intel HD Graphics 2000 and higher)". If the computer is not using that card, the removal of that check mark in preference has helped many with an assortment of Premiere Elements 13/13.1 burn to related issues. See Edit Menu/Preferences/General to find that preference if you have not found it already.
I do not recall seeing mention of a card EVGA GT40 and wonder if it is related (far or near) to any of the NVIDIA cards. But, at any rate, it is not Intel HD Graphics 2000 and higher.
See if the disabled preference has any influence on the burn to problems. If not, then we need to look deeply into the project's Timeline content and structure, part by part.
Just a rough try for now....if you hit the computer End key, does the Timeline Indicator move to the end of the last file of your Timeline content or does it go beyond that point?
If I hit the End key, the CTI goes to the end of the last file added, not beyond.
Well, my last burning failed too, the one with the Hardware Acceleration unchecked. It got to 98% Media Compiled,, and froze up again. When I went to cancel the burn, it asked me if I really wanted to end a burn which was in progress as it always does. When I clicked on YES, the box went dark gray, everything froze until the screen finally went all white and froze. Then I go to Task Manager, go into applications, and it says that PE 13 is not responding. So, I end the task and it clears, and I start over, loading the project.
Now I'll try to burn it again WITH Hardware Acceleration checked again . . . . stand by. Bill
Looking forward to that result with the check mark next to the Intel preference. It should work to resolve this issue, maybe make things worse.
Let us see.
Next step....make a copy of the project (File Menu/Save A Copy).
One copy, delete 1/2 the project, other copy delete the other half of the project. Then burn each separately to DVD disc or burn to folder.
Do either of them complete the burn to disc (or folder) successfully?
I just tried to burn a disc WITH Hardware Acceleration checked, and also "Space to Fit Content"(or something like that) checked, although it doesn't seem to be that big (2.7 GB), and it froze up at 98% media compiled again.
Gonna' take the night off tonight. Will get back to it tomorrow afternoon, A.T. You said you wanted to check some things on my timeline, but remember, it burns Blu-rays just fine.
(I even tried to burn a DVD in my Blu-ray burner because the guy who installed it said it would. But when I inserted the DVD in the Blu-ray PE 13 said 'Media not present". It wasn't inserted in the burner drive I normally burn DVD's in. My computer guy asked if I could manually change the drive PE13 uses, and I said I saw nothing anywhere that would allow me to do that).
But when I insert a Blu-ray disc in the Blu-ray burner, PE13 seems to know and burns automatically to that burner. But it won't burn a regular DVD in the Blu-ray burner even though the computer tech says the burner could do it.
'Night . . . . Bill
Note for when you return to Premiere Elements and the computer...
With these Blu-ray DVD burners, you should be able to insert a Blu-ray or DVD disc into the burner tray. I do not remember having to hit a switch to go between DVD disc and Blu-ray. There is typically lots of troubleshooting to be done when the "Media Not Present" message shows up in the Status field instead of Ready.
What has been working for many is
free ccleaner run through (regular and registry cleaner parts)
Reinstall with antivirus and firewalls disabled
For which one are you getting the Media Not Present message
Publish+Share/Disc/DVD disc DVD-VIDEO standard or widescreen on DVD disc
Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD disc AVCHD on DVD disc
Publish+Share/Disc/Blu-ray disc Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc
How many burners do you have which are named in the drop down list in the Burner Location Field?
Just in case add on...a user can have problems Premiere Elements burning to disc DVD disc DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc for a variety of reasons.
But, we must separate the issues accordingly
1. Those where you cannot start the burn to because the Status field does not show Ready....maybe a Media Not Present message or burner not recognized (nothing listed in the Burner Location field)
2. Those where the burn to starts but fails either at
Burning of Disc
So if you are using multiple resources, please let me know which ones you are using and what the description is for each device.
Before I answer your today's replay, let me answer some more on the previous one.
-You asked me delete the Adobe Premier Elements Prefs file. OK, I just did. Just now.
-As to the Add Media and Projects Assets regimen working for me recently, No, it hasn't. After trying repeatedly to make it work when we talked about it weeks ago, and we developed the workaround, I stopped trying. But recently, I went back just to try it, and I got the same result - it was trying to "log-in" to something or trying to retrieve info from the file. Just I just continued using the workaround to the end of the project.
- As to cascading the windows and dragging the files, I find it easier to just go to Organizer, pick the files I want, and click on "Edit in Premier Elements Editor" (not Elements Editor), and it goes directly to Project Assets at the end, and I then drag it into the timeline where I want.
-You asked if when I tried to import a file was the program asking me for Adobe ID and password was the one that occurred when I was trying to import from my hard drive, my answer is I don't know; I rarely try to import from my hard drive; things are better organized in albums in Organizer, and I can't tell which program it was asking me to sign onto when I tried to import from Add Media..
Now as to Space Required and Bitrate for this burn to DVD widescreen: Space required at highest quality is 2.17 GB. Bitrate is: 8.00 Mbps.
I'll deal with your latest reply soon . . . Bill
As to yesterday's query from you concerning the status fields:
-the Status field shows "Ready" and and it shows the correct Drive location (Drive D, my regular burner) - and the Media IS present because I just saw it and the screen doesn't say it is NOT present
-As I said, the burn starts but hangs up at the 98% mark of the "Compiling Media" and never starts the actual burn
_As too my "multiple devices", I guess you are referring to my two burners. I don't have complete information on them, but I'll tell you what I know:
-The regular DVD burner was purchased with my new 64-bit cloned computer 6 months ago when we had those major problems, I have used it successfully with PE13 MANY times with previous projects, and a few times on the current project, but not since the hangup at 98% Compiling Data.
-My Blu-ray burner work invoice says it is an LG 16X Blu-Ray Burner wh 16ns40, purchased 3 weeks ago.
P.S. Now that I've deleted the Adobe Premiere Prefs file, I may as well try to burn another regular DVD disc. I'll try anything. Bill
My latest attempt to burn a regular DVD with the Premier Elements Prefs file deleted also failed. At the 98% mark of compiling data. Bill
A.T. - I did NOT realize there was drop-down menu in the Burner Location line. Both burners ARE listed there. I have now tried to put the regular DVD in the Blu-Ray drive (my drive J) and I have switched the burner location to Drive J. After re-scanning, it recognized the disc was there and ready. So NOW I am starting the process of burning the DVD to the disc in Drive J. A first. I'll bet it works. Will let you know immediately when it either hangs up or succeeds in burning.
Uh-oh, It froze up on this drive too. So, to re-cap:
-Blu-ray discs burn just fine on my Blu-ray player.
- Regular DVD's freeze up the burn process at the 90% complete point of compiling data - on BOTH burners, the DVD burner AND the Blu-ray Burner.
So, it's obviously something in the project or maybe the program.
Thanks for those replies. I need to catch up with your progress in 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17......
OK, you delete Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file, and you saw no impact on any of your Premiere Elements 13/13.1 issues.
Add Media is still not working for you, but you are content with your Elements Organizer workaround for this project. Two questions on that phase of the issues
- Even though you prefer the Elements Organizer workaround for now, does the drag and drop with cascaded windows work to get files into the Premiere Elements 13/13.1 Editor Expert workpace Project Assets/Timeline?
- Are we agreed that the Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets is an issue specific for this one project, not new projects or other saved closed existing projects?
Moving forward try to write down the wording of the messages from the program at these critical problem times.
Space Required and Bitrate for this burn to DVD widescreen: Space required at highest quality is 2.17 GB. Bitrate is: 8.00 Mbps.
Post 14 through and including 17
Please remind me...did you ever get to making a copy of this project that you are trying to burn to DVD-VIDEO widescreen on DVD disc?
That was the idea of burning a copy with the first half of the project content to disc and burning a copy of the second half of the project content to disc in order to try to localize the portion of the Timeline content that might be causing the problem. Yes, I do realize that the same Timeline content will burn to Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc without issue. Did you try any new brand or type DVDs?
Parenthetically,it's the 98% point of compiling media it freezes up at.
I loaded my OLD project on Africa to see if I could now import pictures from the Organizer like I always used to do.. No, it gives me the same messages that it does in the current project now. To re-cap, these messages are:
- Could not collect log-in information (I don't need to log into anything to import from the Organizer.)
- Couldn't download files. Please check your network connection. (There's nothing wrong with my network connection; I've been using it all day to YOU.)
- Buried under the previous screen is another one which reads "Checking for Asset Revision" which is frozen at 60%. This screen is grayed out.
I'm now going to try to burn a regular DVD from my old Africa project like I did 20 copies of during a total of 4-5 different times - with no problem. Bill
Well, my DVD burner burned another disc of my old project on Africa, but it won't burn a disc of my current project.
So, to re-cap what I've learned about my situation is :
- My inability to import pictures from the Organizer has spread to my old Africa project too. So, that seems to be something in the PE13 program has changed.
-My inability to burn a DVD disc from my current project (The Coast Trip) but my still being able to burn a new DVD from my old project (Africa) seems to indicate a problem with some setting in the current Coast Trip project, not the program.
1. the inability to import pictures the way they should be imported directly from the Organizer is now true of both projects.
2. the inability to burn a regular DVD disc is true only of the current project.
I'm still wracking my brain . . . . Bill
Remind me...how are you presently getting photos from the Elements Organizer to the Premiere Elements Editor
a. In the Elements Organizer, right clicking the thumbnail of interest and selecting Edit with Premiere Elements Editor
b. In the Premiere Elements Editor, Expert workspace, Add Media/Elements Organizer
For current project....did you do the dividing project in half and determining what half goes to a successful burn to disc?
Do you have any other brand type DVD disc nearby?
I did not try a new brand of DVD because it appears the hangup (freeze) occurs BEFORE the actual burn.
How do I burn a HALF of the project? Do I highlight something? Is there some kind of setting. I don't know how to set the project to only burn the first half. Will gladly try it.
I am doing "a"., rioght-clicking on the selected thumbnail and clicking on "Edit with Premier Elements Editor". Then it shows up in Project Assets, NOT the timeline as it says it will.
Bill in Burbank
Try the new disc nonetheless and confirm the no disc and burner involvement by doing the burn to folder instead of burn to disc.
I do not see how you can use Edit with Premiere Elements command in the Elements Organizer and not get the sending into Premiere Elements....but....
Please go to Premiere Elements Editor, Expert workspace, Edit Menu/Preferences/General and tell me what value you have set for Still Image Default Duration.
For Still Image Default Duration, it is set at 150 frames.
You asked once for the exact messages I get when I try to add media through the Organizer in the Expert Timeline. Here is what I do and what I get:
-I click on Add Media, then choose "Elements Organizer"
-When it comes up, I go to an album and highlight the picture I want
-Then I click on Add Files
-A small screen comes up that says, "Download Unsuccessful" in the blue band at the top of the small screen. The screen itself says, "Couldn't download files. Please check your network connection. UNDERNEATH that small screen is another small screen, grayed out, which says: "Downloading files" in what should be the blue band at the top but is grayed out, and the small screen itself says, "Downloading Files" in the band at the top of the small screen, and inside the small screen it says, "Checking for asset revision" and it is frozen and grayed out at 60%.
- When I click on "OK" in the screen labeled "Download Unsuccessful", it just goes back to Add Media screen that has the album from the organizer from which I picked the picture.
-Then I click on "Done" in the Add Media screen , and I'm back to the Expert Timeline where I started with no added picture.
Now, with the Workaround we developed, here is what happens:
-I click on "Organizer" in the bottom task line (I forgot what it's called), and the entire Organizer loads and I'm in it.
- I go to the picture I wish to add and highlight it.
--I right-click the picture and get the long list of commands.
- Click on "Edit with Premier Elements Editor" (NOT Photoshop Elements Editor)
- Then I get the screen that says, "Files sent to Premier Elements Editor will be inserted at the end of the Timeline. Premier Elements default transitions for Still Image and Video Transition will be used."
- When I click on OK, I get a screen which says something like "Files Are Being Added" - AND THEY ARE ADDED TO THE END OF THE TIMELINE THIS TIME! (I SWEAR to you they were not added to the end of the timeline before; they were just added to "Project Assets" and I had to "drag" them to the end of the timeline.)
So, I eagerly just tried to see if I could import pictures from the Organizer from PE like I should be able to. I went to Add Media, clicked on Organizer (which was already loaded and I thought might make a difference), but no, I just got the usual "Couldn't download files. Please check your network connection."
Now I'm going to try to burn "to a folder" - -
No, I just bought a few DVD's of a different brand (Memorex) to try one of them in my burner . . . Bill
Nope, the Memorex discs did not work either. Did the same thing:
-Froze at 98% of Compiling Media
- When I clicked on Cancel, a screen came up asking is I really wanted to cancel a burn session in progress (my wording), and when I click yes, entire program crashes.
- When I go to Windows Task Manager, it says PE 13 is "not responding", so I click on "End Task" and I start over by re-loading the program and project, like I've done a couple dozen times(!).
Now I'll try to burn the project (after re-loading again) to a folder. Will let you know how THAT goes . . . Bill
It DID finish the burn to a folder on my computer. Hope I did it right. Went to Publish and Share, selected "Computer". Took it from there, created a folder for it and browsed to a folder I thought it should be in in Videos, started the process and it began "rendering" the media. Did not take long.
When it got to the same 98% complete of rendering media, it paused, and I thought "Oh no. . . ", but after several seconds, it finished and said it was a successful copy of my project.
Now you still want me to make a burn of each half of the project. You didn't tell me how to do that yet. Bill
Thanks for the replies.
So much for might bright ideas - I asked about the Still Image Duration in the hopes that you had accidentally set it to 1 frame and forgot to set it back to the default = 150 frames (the counterpart of 5 seconds in a NTSC 30 frames per second setup). With that scenario, you would see the thumbnail in Expert workspace Project Assets but not on the Timeline unless you expanded the Timeline with the -+ slider above the Timeline.
The burn to folder results should be interesting.
You did the dividing the project in two and then burn to folder separately for each? Both failed as I remember.
We could look at a copy of the whole project where just certain components are removed, trying to find a component whose removal helps the burn to situation.
But, let us see how the burn to Folder (4.7 GB) for DVD-VIDEO widescreen on DVD disc works out.
To be continued...
I missed seeing your post 30 about burn to folder done already, but I think we need to talk. From your description, you did not do the burn to Folder (4.7 GB) for DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc. What you did was export to file (and you do not get menus with that route). What did you do when you did Publish+Share/Computer/ what came after that? At any rate, you will have a file without menus.
What you want to do is t
with burn to = Folder (4.7 GB). You designate the Save In location and the project does the rest creating folders. So we need for you to do that.
All may not be lost with your detour to Publish+Share/Computer....depends on what you did after Computer. You might import that file into a new project, apply menus, and then do your burn to Folder (4.7 GB) or burn to disc with preset = NTSC_Widescreen_Dolby DVD.
This is what you should have looking at in 13/13.1 in Publish+Share for the burn to Folder (4.7 GB) route
You're right. I exported to file. I will try again with your very complete directions, thank you. Bill
Thanks for the update.
I think we are close to success. Hope that is the case.
I am keeping that positive thought.
Nope, it froze in the same place in two tries, one with fit to space available checked and one without. Froze at 98% media compiled.
I noticed when I exported to a folder, it even paused at the 98% compiled data mark there, but after several seconds, it finished successfully. So I figured the hangup must be in the very last step when it's doing something just prior to beginning the burn. So that's why I tried unchecking "Fit to available space" line. Didn't help.
Now just because it's a habit with me, I'll try yet another burn on a regular DVD. After all, it's another day . . . . Will let you know in about an hour, Bill
Another failure. Oh well . . . Failed at very same place: 98% Compiling data . . . When I cancelled, the screen went blank, and the Task Manager said PE13 was not responding.
Disappointing, but onward.
Remember you were successful in exporting that Timeline content to a file saved to the computer hard drive. Have you imported that export into a new project, added the menus, and tried for the burn to disc DVD-VIDEO Wisescreen on DVD disc or burn to Folder (4.7 GB)? If not, please look at that next.
Let us recap...do we agree that the problem that we have been working on is one project. And, only this one project is affected by these problems, that is, getting the Timeline content to DVD-VIDEO Widescreen on DVD disc with burn to Folder (4.7 GB) or burn to disc (+new discs)? If all of the above is true, how much time would it take to put the project together in a new project part by part if it came to that?
Did you want to look at downloading and installing Premiere Elements 13/13.1 so that you would be working with new installation files?
Yes, it seems the burn problem is limited to one project. But I would like to create one more project I need to do which is a short one relatively, and then try to burn that one to DVD and see what happens.
Re-creating the problem project part by part .would be time-prohibitive. I'd like to create the new project described above and see how it works. If it has the same burn problem, then I would think it's a program problem and the re-installation you mention would be called for.
If the new project imports pictures fine and burns the DVD's fine, then it is something unique to the one project. I would consider doing the transfer from the folder that you mentioned but I would re-create the project from the folder without the menus. I don't care for the way they work (especially the road trip one I chose for this project), and the menu(s) COULD be the source of the compiling media problem.
Give me a couple of days to create the new little project I need to do, and then I will tell you know the results. I hope the suspense doesn't do you any harm :-) Bill
Thanks for the strategy update. Sounding promising.
But, let me ask...in this problem project, have you ever done a burn to disc or folder with no menus? Or, replaced the original menu for the problem project with another? Those menus and the Timeline markers could present problems if
a. The Timeline markers are too close together, especially when you are placing a stop marker at the end of one clip and a scene marker at the beginning of the next clip.
b. In the Movie Menu customization area, you could have rearranged the menu buttons and have them overlapping (look for red frames around the buttons in that case).
Please review all before you start these next series of runs.
We will be watching for the results and keeping positive thoughts of success.
