Yes absolutely certain the text is selected. I've just reset my prefs for AE and Bridge and I'm still getting the error.
- You may need to select the layer, not highlight the text...
- Is this a 3rd party text effect you are trying to run, or one that is built in to After Effects?
You are seeing the scripting interface, which typically means an error in the script. My next recommendation would be to un-install and re-install After Effects (sadly).

Sounds like this is AE CC 2015. If so, don't drag them in from Bridge. Instead, make a note of what you want, find it in the effects and presets pane in AE, and try dragging it in from there. See if it works.
Or just use AE CC 2014, where it still works properly.
Thanks for your help. It's a built in effect within AE, not third party. I am definitely selecting the layer and not highlighting the text.
When I browse the text effects in AE rather than bridge, it only shows 2? Not the full list like I can see in Bridge.
- Can you look in this folder on your Hard drive?
- Applications > Adobe After Effects CC > Presets > Text
Does your list match my screen shot?
If not, I would recommend un-installing and re-installing After Effects. You can do that in the Creative Cloud application, by clicking Apps and hitting the Wheel pop-up menu next to After Effects.
I am having this same issue.
