What format is the file saved as on your disc?
Open a sample of the file in G Spot or Media Info and post the resolution, frame rate and, above all, the video and audio codecs and we'll recommend how to proceed.
Note that versions 7 and 9 are able to work with far fewer video formats than newer versions of the program. In fact, 7 and 9 can pretty much only work with camcorder video.
I’m not sure, it was deleted, but it did open and the video was fine, I have mp4, avi and wmv files that work fine. Could I be missing some codec’s?
I tried to download a couple but Chrome won’t let me.
Also, when I save a file from Elements it saves as .prel and if I try to ‘get media’ to open that file I receive an error message, ‘This type of file is not supported, or the proper codec is not instelled.’
The .prel file is a Premiere Elements project file. It's not a media file. You open a .prel by going to File/Open -- not by using Add Media.
I'm not sure what you mean by "it did open and the video was fine", etc. What do you mean by "worked fine"? Worked fine where? In Premiere Elements?
Mp4s will work in later versions of Premiere Elements. But, as I said above, versions 10 and earlier pretty much work with basic camcorder video like DV-AVIs, HDV and M2T files.
I mean the video was fine in Premiere Elements but there was no sound. I just opened the same file in ‘Video Pad by NCH Software’ and I have sound and video and I can edit out the commercials, so what happened to the sound in Elements? What am I missing?
It has to do with the audio and video codecs.
You can identify these codecs by using G Spot or Media Info, as I suggested in my first post.
