I mentioned in my original post that I had checked permissions.
Anyway, I executed the command in terminal, and it makes no difference. Lightroom still refuses to start and gives the same error as before.
I would request you to please uninstall Lightroom once again.
Enable the Root Account, How to enable Root Account : https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204012
Then please reinstall Lightroom in the Root Account, and see if you are able to open Lightroom.
Logging in as root the first time, caused the Mac to freeze with a black screen and white mouse pointer - no menu bar or anything. I had to hold in the power button to power off and on again. Then logging in as root worked, and Lightroom worked. I logged out and in as a normal user, and tried again. It seems to work now, but I don't understand why.
It might be some kind of permissions issue, which were fixed when installed in the Root Account.
