EVGA GeForce GTX 970 or 980Ti

    JuliePete

I'm in the middle of designing a computer build and trying to decide between the GTX 970 or the more expensive 980Ti.  I'll be using the system for 4K video editing in Premiere Pro CC 2015 as well as extension Lightroom and Photoshop work.  Does anyone have experience with both cards who can tell me if there are any advantages to the 980Ti.  I'm on a tight budget and don't want to invest in the more expensive card if I don't need it.  Thanks for any help!

Read everything at Tweakers Page - especially the part about building a balanced system

Thanks very much John for your quick reply and link!  Actually I have already scoured the Tweakers Page but haven't found an answer to this particular question.  My build is a Skylight Z170 7600 with 32GB ram.

The 970 is almost overkill on such a system. The 980Ti is definitely way overkill. The 4-core CPU is just too slow to tax the 970 much, even when heavily overclocked.

Would a 6 core Zeon build affect the answer to my question?  Here is my build so far:

                Xeon E5 1650 v3, ASUS X99 Deluxe/U31, Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4,Intel Solid-State Drive  750 (400 GB) ,Samsung 500GB 850,Fractal Design Define R5 ,Noctua NH-U12DXi4 120mm SSO2 CPU Cooler,Noctua NF-A14 PWM 140mm Case Fans x4   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 or EVGA Geforce 980 Ti ?

Definitely the 970 since the CPU can not be overcklocked at all. Maybe even a 960 would be enough.

Why would you stick a Xeon in an x99 board?  The only real advantage is that they can be used in multiple CPU motherboards.  With an i7-5930K you could very easily get 4+ GHz out of it.  Also take advantage of that M.2 socket get yourself a 512 GB Samsung SM951 for the same price as the that you have for the Intel 400 GB 750.  The Samsung can write faster during your exports.  Then get a Samsung 850 Pro for your boot drive and you will only need a 256 GB SSD at the most.

like bill says, not much point in xeon unless going for ecc/r-dimm memory. you can also go with the i7-5820k to save money, which when overclocked is very close to the more expensive i7-5930k, just less pcie lanes. if you get an m.2, wait for the samsung 950 pro and make sure there is good cooling for the m.2 as they have no heatsinks like the intel 750. you will want one of the large noctua heatsinks like the d14 or d15 to get good overclocking.
