First off, thanks for your quick reply.
What you have said is a solution, but not the solution I was looking hoping for. This will now create two catalogs. When I want to search for an image, I have to close/open to go between the two. I use Lr solely for underwater photos. When I take a new image of a creature, I like to do a keyword search to see what my old photos of the creature look like. Maybe the new photo is better and I will use it to replace my old one. To do this with multiple catalogs will be a pain in the butt.
As I previously said, I have had this happen in the past with other versions of Lr. I was able to fix it without creating a new catalog. Last time I think I just gave up on the bugs in Lr5, so I downloaded the new version and the problem was fixed. Any other ideas???
You could try deleting the LR's preview cache, stored in <catalog name> Previews.lrdata. There have been the occasional reports of that cache getting corrupted. See this article for details on how to delete it: Why And How To Clear Your Lightroom Cache | Lightroom Fanatic. Beware that, depending on the size of your catalog, it could take many hours for LR to rebuild previews and it may not be very usable until it finishes.
