Version 5.2 Camera Raw 8.2. I just "looked for updates" and updated this
morning. How do I get 8.8?
Lightroom 5 can be updated to LR 5.7.1, and that has Camera Raw 8.7.1.
So you may use the DNG Converter to convert the files and then use them.
For Windows : Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows
Else you need to upgrade to Lightroom 6.
First, thank you so much for your help! I've updated to 5.7.1. When I click
import, at the top it says "copy as DNG", so I click on that and then
select import, it still tells me it's not a supported file type. I swear
I'm not dumb.... but this is confusing.

You are Welcome, you cannot import it as "Copy as DNG".
So first you need to download and install " DNG Converter ", from the link that I have provided.
And then you will be able to import the files in Lightroom.

I think Tanuj meant to say
So you may must use the DNG Converter to convert the files and then use them.
You must download DNG Converter version 9.0 or later (actually version 8.8 will work as well) and use that to convert the files and then import the DNGs into Lightroom. There is no other way with Lightroom 5.
Or you can upgrade your software by purchasing either Lightroom CC or Lightroom 6, and then you won't need the DNG Converter.
