Don't know how to do a screen shot on my macbook air.
I have imported a single photo.
i can see 2 images - CR02 and a faded jpeg
i have selected the raw file and clicked on copy and selected import (bottom right) (the add and move buttons are greyed out)
Some import functions were not recognised
The file is not recognised by the raw format support in light room
Are you 100% sure you have Lightroom version 5.7? How do you know? Where did you check?
Are you 100% sure you are using a Canon 450D? How do you know? Where did you check?

I appreciate you help. Thanks tony.
Just one thing before I go. are there any key setting i need to make in lightroom preferences?
To include a screen capture, you click on the camera icon in the toolbar when you are typing a message.
You screen capture doesn't display the problem you mentioned. Everything looks fine in this screen capture.
Dj - If i set my camera so that it just takes raw photos then Lightroom does recognise the raw file. It is only when my camera is set to Jpeg/Raw that the raw files fail to get recognised.
I'm of the opinion that I don't take up anymore of your time and I am prepared to accept the current state of play.
Thanks for your help and support.
