    Lightroom CC crashes constantly

    Dan Power Photography

I am experiencing crippling issues with LR CC crashing several times a day, sometimes up to several times an hour.  It's crashed twice in the last ten minutes.

I have tried disabling graphics acceleration, doesn't seem to have helped although I have only done it recently.  It has crashed since then though.

Searching these forums didn't turn up much, any Adobe staff care to help or has someone had a similar problem and resolved it?

      Thanks.

          Hi Dan,

I believe you have disabled the Display Processor use from Lightroom preferences. You should not be facing the crashing issue now.

If in case Lightroom crahses again, please provide the below information.

          > Which version of Lightroom are you using?

          > Which operating system are you using?

          > Please post the error log.

There are many reports of LR crashing. To be able to help you we need the exact version of LR you are using, the exact version of the operating system your computer is running and the amount of RAM you have installed.

99% of the time the crashes are caused by faulty hardware most likely a RAM issue. Although the most current version of LR, 2015.2.1/6.2.1, is loaded with BUGS. So it might help reverting to an earlier version like 2015.1.1/6.1.1.

Also it's worth noting that this laptop has had a brand spanking new SSD installed under warranty, was having some issues with the old one which I thought were causing the crashing but it's persisted after the new drive was installed.

                Cheers.

Is your Lightroom application still crashing?

If these crashes started before you upgraded to OS X 10.11 and or you installed LR 2015.2.1 then it is a hardware problem. More than likely a RAM problem.

"IF" you never had LR installed before and this is a New Mac that came with OS X 10.11 there are some serious bugs in the most current release of LR that are causing all kinds of problems on OS X 10.x. So much so Adobe originally release 2015.2 then just 4 days later released 2015.2.1 to correct Some of the problems but not all.

Thanks, they have been happening for a while now so definitely before I updated to OSX10.11 (did that last week) and probably since before I updated LR last.  But they haven't been happening since day 1 of having this machine... they started about three months after I bought it (which was about six months ago).

I don't have issues with ANY other software.  I had an issue with some bad sectors on the PCI-e SSD which was causing VLC to crash and then the thing wouldn't start and needed to be restored from a backup.  That happened twice in three months so I took it back to Apple and last week they put a new SSD in (the part alone was over a grand, lucky it was under warranty!) and it's been purring along nicely ever since.

Where does LR store it's error log file?  If there is something in there that can help me convince Apple that there's a RAM problem, I'll take it in there and get them to replace it.  They were AMAZING about the SSD... all the Apple diagnostic software said it was fine but I ran the S.M.A.R.T utility in front of the guy and it showed up a whole bunch of errors.. he ordered the part in front of me, three days later I took it back in they put a new drive in it in 20 minutes.  So it shouldn't be a problem doing the same with the RAM as long as I can show them some clear evidence...

If this is on a Retina MBP the only way to change the RAM is to replace the whole, complete, logic board (Motherboard) as the RAM is soldered onto the board.

I suggest you download and run Memtest86 and let it run overnight to test out the RAM.

Also if you haven't done this already I suggest you buy the AppleCare extended warranty. You have up to one year from date of purchase to buy the extended warranty. It will add 2 more years to the warranty and as you have found out to repair a Mac after the warranty runs out is VERY expensive. So much so it is cheaper to buy a new computer.

                            Best of luck to you.

Thanks, already writing the image to the USB key

I tossed up getting AppleCare but in Aus consumer law requires them to warranty it against defects for "a reasonable period of time" which is the amount of time someone would expect the product to last.... Apple themselves consider this to be two years, so after 12 months but before 24 months you're pretty much guaranteed they won't argue about warranty... if you were good at arguing you could probably get most stuff repaired in the third year... my last laptop lasted five years and the one before lasted seven, so it's perfectly 'reasonable' to request warranty service within three years..

That being said they would probably make life a bit difficult in the second year and definitely in the third year and beyond...

Dunno.  I have a few more months to buy Applecare so will think about it a bit more.  As you say though parts are damn expensive so maybe it's worth just throwing $300 away to make life a bit easier

Oh how long does memtest usually take to run on today's machines, is it definitely an overnight job?

                                Ta.

Yes it is an Overnight affair. For Memtest to really do its job it need to run many passes. For that to happen it needs to run for many hours. Although when I had some Really Bad RAM it only took a few minutes to turn up errors so there was no need to let it run longer. On questionable RAM the first pass might not find anything wrong but subsequent passes taxes the RAM more and will show errors if there are any.

IMHO running it overnight is the only way to be sure the RAM is or isn't the problem.

Sorry but Apple computers aren't any better built, don't use any better hardware, than what you find in any other brand computer. They just cost more, have sleek cases, run an alternative operating system and have the Apple Logo on them.

I used Mac's for a while and switched back to Windows PCs. Personally I will never buy another Apple product.

                                    Sweet, will run it tonight.

Agree with you about the comparison, although I do REALLY like how thin and light it is.  Screen is pretty amazing too (Retina MBP).  But it doesn't run *that* much quicker than my much lower specced PC and TBH Lightroom runs quite slowly comparatively, loading images (until the histogram pops up) can take several seconds and sometimes five to ten.  I only bought this cause my old one was stolen and the insurance company literally wrote me a blank cheque, said "go get whatever you want," I'd never have paid what I (they) did for this otherwise.  At least if I decide I want to palm this off in six months I can probably still get enough to cover a new PC laptop of the same spec

Nice and shiny though!!  To be fair the warranty service when the SSD started to have trouble was REALLY good, I can kind of understand why people stay with Apple.  Oh and having a UNIX-feeling terminal to play with without having to shutdown and boot into something else is fun haha, I used to play with various *NIXs back in the day but they were always so clunky that I never really took my whole workload over to them, just played around when I was bored.

Anyways TBH I'll most likely go back to a Windows PC when it's time to buy new again...

I'm not sure that this is a correct assumption.

Even on Windows Lightroom 6.2.1 will not release RAM after it uses it. A point in case is say if you run HDR Merge or Panorama it just doesn't release the RAM after performing the operation.

As well, going to develop module it just keeps taking up RAM and not releasing it. Especially if you are using it for larger RAW files such as the 5DS/5DSR at 60MB.

Something has changed dramatically since v6.1 and not just the Import Screen.

I see........... and how is this at all relevant to my Lightroom CC2015.2.1 install on Mac OS X 10.11?

And through iStatMenus I can watch LR use RAM then release it.

Pretty sure you've posted that reply on the wrong thread buddy.

I see........... and how is this at all relevant to my Lightroom CC2015.2.1 install on Mac OS X 10.11?

And through iStatMenus I can watch LR use RAM then release it.

Pretty sure you've posted that reply on the wrong thread buddy.

No he is posting to the correct thread. He is disputing my assumption it is a hardware problem because in all honesty the LR 2015.2 (.0 or .1)/6.2 (.0 or .1) release is BUGGY beyond belief. I would suggest you revert to the 1.1 release and see what happens.

But if you were running the 1.1 release before and it was crashing all the time that to me suggests a hardware problem
