I don't see the option to avoid duplicates?
Adobe removed that feature (and many others) from the new import in CC 2015.2 / 6.2. They have apologized for that and for introducing a large number of bugs, and in the next release they'll be restoring the old import functionality: Lightroom 6.2 Release Update and Apology, Lightroom 6.2 Import Update.
Meanwhile, while you could try to troubleshoot problems with 2015.2.1 / 6.2.1, I highly recommend you revert to 2015.1.1 / 6.1.1, the last stable release: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-roll-back-to-lightroom-2015-1-1-or-lightroom-6-1-1/. Many, many people have done that, and even Adobe now recommends it if you encounter serious problems (and you very possibly will).
Unclick the Add Photos Screen did help with starting Import, thanks. Not using GPU seems backwards but seems to help as well thanks. Still slow. Lightroom 5 was so much faster. Any idea what to do about the "avoid duplicates" ?
Thanks far all the help.
What's your operating system?
