How can I import an Illustrator file into InDesign and maintain the layer names as well as the layers themselves? I have tried saving as a 1.6 PDF as suggested in other forums but cannot get the layers or their names to show up in InDesign. I am working with a package creation software called Kasemake to create cutting, scoring, etc files for an automated cutting system. This software will export an .ai file with the different cutting, scoring etc functions each on a different layer and with a specific name that references a different tool for each layer. I can add text and images in Illustrator if I have to, but would prefer to do this in InDesign.
If you expect those layers to correspond to InDesign layers you are going to be disappointed.
If you want to be able to control the visibility of those layers you can do so by right clicking the AI object and choose object layer options.
