"Use Graphics Processor" Grayed Out.

Hello,

I have spent many hours over many days trying to resolve this myself and have read through many threads posing the same question/problem.

I am unable to "Use Graphics Processor" which is killing my productivity/efficiency.

I run an AMD R9 290 on the latest Driver accurate as of the date of this post.

Please see attached screenshots for clarification and to acknowledge I have performed what should be expected before posting.

I Rolled Back the Driver to when it used to work but it no longer does.

I have confirmed there are others using the same Driver version on the same GPU as I am on Photoshop CC 2014 and CC 2015 that are working fine.

I have performed a clean install of Photoshop CC 2015, AMD Catalyst and my GPU Drivers as well as rolled back Windows 10 to a previous build when it used to work, but that did not help either.

So as of now, Photoshop, my Drivers and Windows are all up to date.

Thank you for the most thorough information I've seen anyone post in a long time.

Have you added the sniffer to the Catalyst Control Center? I don't notice it in the list. The sniffer evaluates the drivers and activates Photoshop's GPU related features if the drivers pass inspection.

AMD: Open either Configure Switchable Graphic (laptop) or Catalyst Control Center (desktop) and add sniffer.exe and Photoshop.exe (from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2015).

Reboot your system before starting Photoshop after you make that change just to be sure.

I hadn't thought of that... I have now done so; power-cycled my Desktop but unfortunately it's still grayed out.

I'd be interested to see what the sniffer is reporting:

In the Start menu, type CMD to bring up the Command Prompt box. If it shows up in the list, right click on it and choose "Run as Administrator".

In the command prompt box type cd C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2015 to get to that directory. Type sniffer and hit Enter.

You should see the results of the sniffer test. Post a screenshot of the results.

Well looking at my PC and running the sniffer, it seems you are getting errors that fails to return information about your driver.

Failed Requirement: GLStatus == NO_GL_ERROR

I'm looking at a screenshot of your driver and I'm wondering if you installed a beta that is not playing well with the sniffer. If anything I would suggest uninstalling the driver and finding a stable release. The problem is I don't know what might be recommended and I think you can ask AMD citing the problems you have with the sniffer.

That's the best I have for now. It doesn't fix anything, but I hope it's a good pointer to an answer.

I ran a tool to perform a clean uninstall of all AMD drivers in my system and deleted all residual AMD folders and files.

I then installed the Stable Release driver (15.7.1) rather than the Beta which I had in the test results above, and still the same issue unfortunately.

2 different drivers not working, where-as Lightroom picks it up okay so it won't be Hardware related. Others seem to be hit and miss across NVIDIA and AMD with the exact same error which makes me wonder if it's an API issue w/ Photoshop CC in particular.

I also notice that Lightroom picks up my OS as Windows 10, but Photoshop fails to do so and translates it as Windows 8.1 (a small error but an error nonetheless and I wonder if it could possibly be related somehow...)

I can't claim to know how to exactly read this, but "Failed Requirement" might mean it didn't get that "GL_NO_ERROR" and the sniffer still is not seeing the driver version and date.

Well, I contacted Adobe over 2 weeks ago now, we spent hours going through everything. Uninstalled everything, redid drivers, checked cmd, folders... we did everything I had already said I had done on a remote assist session and after like 3 hours they couldn't resolve it and said they "would get back to me". I think 2 weeks is far too long to get back to me on something that I pay for... Adobe, please, fix this issue for me? I'm suffering here. Trying to use Photoshop without GPU acceleration / assistance is like trying to run Windows 10 on 512mb of RAM let alone I can't do anything 3D related. Lightroom works fine so Photoshop should too.

I have updated again to the newest driver for my GPU (Crimson) but it makes no difference. ALL MY NOTES should hopefully be on file after the extremely lengthy remote support session.

Please, I'm desperate... and in need of at least 1 month's refund for this =.=

Your video card driver is returning garbage for several things that Photoshop is trying to obtain information about.

You need to contact your GPU maker, and see if they have an update to fix the driver bugs.

Contacting Adobe won't help, because it is your video card driver that is not working correctly.

I appreciate your response.

The thing is, even when I uninstalled my GPU drivers and used my integrated card... Photoshop still remained grayed out - the representative I spoke with at Adobe confirmed with me that there is clearly an error on Photoshop end, so there seems to be a mismatch of communication here.

I'm unsure as to why Lightroom is fully capable of detecting my Graphics Card but Photoshop isn't as well...

Also, I have contacted AMD - twice, we have gone through remote assist sessions and they found 0 errors on their end / my end. Not to mention using drivers ranging from 2 years old to the most recent one a few days old.

All the above, including prior contact during the remote session in which I was told I would be contacted by Adobe regarding this, is really not a good look...

Funniest thing happened.

Photoshop releases a patch/update - it fixed my problem.

All the hours of troubleshooting I spent and being told from Adobe Support that the issue was with AMD/me and a patch from Photoshop fixed it.

So... not sure what to say or think there but at least it's working.

ChrisCox‌ thought you might like to know this, based on your response to me which came across as quite rude to be frank.

I am having the same problem as mentioned above. Though I am running Photoshop on a different machine (i7-5500U with GeForce 840m). Newest drivers are installed. I cannot use the graphic processor. The option is grayed out all the time (it works fine with Illustrator CC). I tried all the things I could find on the net. I used the integrated graphics as well as the dedcated one (for both: sniffer and PS) but nothing worked out. I would be very glad if somebody could help me for I really need the GL-Features. Thanks in advance!

Dear Chris,

thank you for your reply. I looked it up but my drivers are working fine. It is the sniffer that is unable to recognize the correct drivers. My "Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500" has an Intel driver and my "GeForce 840m" one from nVidia. Both are up to date (newest Versions - checked today) and the OS is a clean reinstall (not some old messy OS). So how can I tell Photoshop to use the correct ones? (As I already mentioned: Illustrator - and all the other CC-Programs do not have any problems...)

GeoForce GPU not detected

1)Right click on desktop and choose "NVIDIA Control Settings"

2)Look at left panel,under

3D Settings --> Manage 3D settings

now you have 2 tabs GLOBAL SETTINGS and PROGRAM SETTINGS.

Under GLOBAL SETTINGS tab under "Preferred graphics processor" choose "High Performance NVIDIA processor". Don't change any other details on that tab.

Now,under PROGRAM SETTINGS tab

click the button ADD which will ask you to browse the program you want.

Add sniffer.exe and Photoshop.exe (from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2015).

choose the ".exe" file and click OK,the under "select the preferred graphics processor for this program" choose "High performance NVIDIA processor".

Click OK(if there is any) to save the changes and you're done.

Next time when you open Photoshop it will run by NVIDIA card.

Hello gener7,

thank you for your quick and detailed response. Unfortunately I already tried this and it didn't work. It makes no difference if I choose the Intel or the nVidia graphics (of course for the sniffer and the program). The only thing that helps is disabling the dedicated graphics (in the device manager) before starting PS but seriously, that CANNOT be the way to run a professional program without errors... When I decide to use the integrated graphics for sniffer and PS the sniffer protocol has no problems with the drivers but still the graphic processor doesn't work (only with the dedicated graphics disabled).

BTW: The error occurred only after updating PS in late December... I never had any problems with PS before and I use it quite a lot (well I have to... I have to work with it...)
