Help Please! Required codec is not installed

    daveujn

      Hi

I wanted to import some movie files from my iMac to start a new project and received this error message

" This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed"

but if I just continued the files were added to the project, which has happened before, with no obvious problem.

The problem this time is that I can add the clip to the timeline and play it back ok but if I want to add a transition and then render, when it is finished the audio can be heard but not the video.

      Any advice would be appreciated

I use an iMac and premier elements 10

Open one of your video files in the free download Media Info and post the resolution, frame rate and audio and video codec it displays.

Note that, in Premiere Elements 10, you must manually set up your project to match your video specs -- something you can't do until you know what the video specs are.

Already asked are the must know video audio properties of the file that you are trying to import into your Premiere Elements 10 Mac project.

            But, also....

What video card/graphics card does your computer use.

There is a serious known issue with Premiere Elements 10 on a computer that uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card.

            http://atr935.blogspot.com/2014/02/pe10-nvidia-video-card-roll-back.html

Good to rule in or out at the onset whether or not any of that applies to your situation. The solution for this is to roll back the driver version to May 1013 if the older driver still exists.

Do you have the latest version of QuickTime 7 installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 10? And, are you running the programs as administrator (from a user account with administrative privileges)? What players do you have installed on your computer?

The graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB

                Quicktime player is version 10.4

                I am running as administrator

                Players installed is just quicktime.

Great news that your computer is not using a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card when you have Premiere Elements 10 installed on the computer.

The MediaInfo Mac video audio properties readout program can be found

                  http://mediainfo-mac.en.softonic.com/mac

Just be careful with your decisions in downloading and installing MediaInfo programs since they are known to travel with unwanted baggage.

Look for the Tree View in MediaInfo to explore its video and audio properties.

Sometimes I can get all the troubleshooting information that I need from the brand/model/settings of the camera that recorded the video.

                  Basic information includes

                  Video compression

                  Audio compression

                  Frame Size

                  Frame Rate

                  Interlaced or Progressive

                  File Extension

                  Pixel Aspect Ratio

Problems ranging from audio out of sync or not being able to import the file can come from video audio recorded with a variable, instead of a constant, frame rate...characteristic of cell phone, iPad.

Another free tool for getting at properties of the file is the codec utility named GSpot.

                  GSpot Codec Information Appliance

its Video Name Codec Status and Audio Codec Status information can be very helpful.

Same goal for all of the above....getting at the video audio properties that might be in conflict with the project settings and workflow.

                    Hi ATR

The model of the camera is a Sony HDR-CX130E

When I get the error code above the clips to be imported it determines the clips as Cache.plist

Have also located this information from one of the clips.

                          Dave

Please remind me, what version of Premiere Elements, what computer operating system.

                          Please confirm your information.

You say that your camera is Sony HDR-CX130E. The specifications for that camera show AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) as the video compression used by that camera. Yet, your properties readout point to video compression = MotionJPEG.

HDR-CX240E Specifications | Handycam Camcorders | Sony UK

Consequently, we need to confirm that important point.

Premiere Elements can have problems with the MotionJPEG video compression. The classical remedies include

                          1. Convert the MotionJPEG to another format before import into Premiere Elements project

                          or

                          2. If there is a utilities software that came with the camera, then install it with the hope that it will install the MotionJPEG codec needed for the Premiere Elements project

                          or

                          3. Go online and purchase a MotionJPEG codec.

Please consider, and supply more details. If any questions or need clarification on the above, please do not hesitate to ask. Supplemental details will be supplied.

                          Thank you.

                                Thanks for the follow up.

I am still wondering how you got the file described (MotionJPEG.mov) from that Sony HDR-CX130E camera.

Please refer to the link with that camera's specifications that I posted already.

Do you have any camera literature to support recording with other than the AVCHD video compression? Or, is this clip one that was modified by you between camera recording and import into Premiere Elements?

Even though the clip's format is being read as "Format: QuickTime/MPEG-4/Motion JPEG 2000 format", the video codec is shown as unknown.

                                From your clip's readout:

The FourCC: icod seems to be the identifier for Apple Intermediate Codec. And, you are working with Premiere Elements 10 Mac on a Mac computer.

But, the readout cannot identify the video codec in the file. And, your video card/graphics card is not NVIDIA GeForce.

Is QuickTime 7 installed and updated on your computer?

Is this a one of a kind issue...only this one file among a batch of files from the same camera settings that will not import?

                                Please consider.

Thanks. That screenshot is good information in narrowing down troubleshooting.

The project is supposed to set the project preset automatically based on its analysis of the properties of the first file dragged to the Timeline.

If it cannot, then in Premiere Elements 14/14.1, the project gives you the closest fit which may or may not be that close.

Where you get into a "deal breaker" with setting mismatch is when you try to apply Stabilizer Reduction. That does not work until the project preset matches the video properties.

If the program cannot set the project preset correctly, then you set it manually before you import the file into the project. Use the following scheme

                                    • Open the project to the Expert workspace, and go to File Menu/New Project and Change Settings.
                                    • In Change Settings, set the project preset to match the properties of the source media. OK out of there.
                                    • In the New Project dialog that opens, rename the project and make sure to have a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project". OK out of there.
                                    • Back in the Expert workspace, import your source media using Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag the file to the Timeline track.

Your .m4v file just described in post 13 should be compatible with your Premiere Elements Mac project, using the manually set project preset

                                    NTSC

                                    AVCHD

                                    AVCHD-LITE 720p30

Whomever sets the project preset, you can verify what has been set after the file is placed on the Timeline, using Edit Menu/Project Settings/General.

Although you cannot make any significant changes in the project preset that was set, that is a good place to verify what has been set.

                                    Please consider.

                                    Thank you.

Just to provide an update I have tried to add some edits to some previous footage that I have edited before as mentioned.

Results were that I could Import the clips when clicking no to the above error message and I can view it ok but as soon as I add a fade the video image defaults to the media pending box.

Apologizes for the delayed response and detouring from your Premiere Elements 10 with mention of Premiere Elements 14. My post 14 detour in detail did not change the outcome; there just was not a "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project" option in the version 10 new project dialog. If you set the Premiere Elements 10 Mac project preset for

                                          NTSC

                                          AVCHD

                                          AVCHD-LITE 720p30

you were OK with my instructions (based on the properties of the questioned video that was later imported into the new project).

(There is just the Video Stabilizer in 10, no Shake Reduction which replaced Shake Stabilizer which replaced Video Stabilizer later in the versions.)

At this point, my major question involves your report of no change...do you mean

                                          a. You are still getting the message about mismatch of project settings with properties of this video

                                          or

                                          b. The mismatch message is gone, but you have the message " This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed"

Would it be possible to send a small sample of the video which is involved in this issue? You can send the sample using a shareable link obtained from Google Drive or Dropbox. I can give you the details for the Google Drive way. The important feature of the sending is that the shareable link has included in it permissions necessary to view and download the file.

I need to clarify whether or not you are looking a ProRes, Apple Intermediate Files, or a regular video file.

                                          Please consider.

                                            a. You are still getting the message about mismatch of project settings with properties of this video

                                            or

Strangely I am getting both and it does not seem to make a difference if it was an M4V or .MOV file.

This was the latest error message.

I think that posting sample of the file that you are actually trying to import into Premiere Elements is going to be the quickest way to resolve this issue.

According to your latest screenshot, it looks like there is no .mov or .mp4 or other movie file format that is being reported under Add Media Failures. It looks like the import error is targeting .xml files - .HashTable.xml and .HashTable.xml. Is there anything more to that readout than what is shown?

I do not recall .xml ever being supported by Premiere Elements. Those should be informational files, not the video files.

The video audio properties of your actual problem file with .mov file extension tell me

                                                Video Format = Intermediate Codec

Codec = icod (aka Apple Intermediate Codec)

                                                Frame Size = 1920 x 1080

Frame Rate = 25 interlaced frames per second

                                                Bitrate (variable) = 102 Mbps

                                                Audio Format = PCM

                                                Codec ID = sowt

                                                Channels = 2

                                                Sampling Rate = 48.0 KHz

                                                Bitrate = 1536 Kbps

I am strictly an Elements Windows user. And, Premiere Elements 10 and Premiere Elements 14/14.1 on Windows 7 64 bit will not import the file.

If I take the file into the free HandBrake program and convert it to the H.264.mp4 @ 25 frames per second (constant), then I can import and use this version in both Premiere Elements 10 and Premiere Elements 14/14.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I am within 99.999% certainty that the H.264.mp4 would work in your Premiere Elements 10 on your iMac.

Also of note is that QuickTime Windows will not play back with video Apple Intermediate Codec, only audio. But....

What is unclear to me is why these Apple Intermediate Codec.mov files are not working on your iMac with its QuickTime 7 and iMovie as part of the mix. When you try to play back your file on your QuickTime 7 installed on your iMac, do you get video as well as audio playback? I do not have any Mac experience enough to know if downloading and installing an Apple Intermediate Codec would resolve the QuickTime 7 player issue as well as that in the Premiere Elements 10 Mac program. One alternative might be to convert the Apple Intermediate Codec to Apple Pro Res 422.

At this time, the issue seems to be pointing to the Apple Intermediate Codec. Still doing research to determine how the Apple deal with this - convert? If you do not get input here from Mac users, do you have any contact with Apple on this?

In answer to your question both audio and video is fine when played via quicktime.

Also what I do not understand is why when using the same camera some of the files are .Mov files which will not play back when rendered. And some are M4v files which seem to be ok?

I await to see if you or any Mac user has any more information.

Has it always been the case....problem with files with .mov file extension and no problem with files with .mp4 file extension?

I know from the file that you sent that the .mov is using the Apple Intermediate Codec. Do you know what video codec the .mp4 is using?

Please try to find out. If it is not Apple Intermediate Codec, then that would further point to the cause of the problem = Apple Intermediate Codec.

Also, can you import your Apple Intermediate Codec.mov file into iMovie on your iMac? Can you do the same with the .mp4 file from your camera?

Some extra thoughts (not that I know Premiere that well, but I know QuickTime)...

One of the above file reports showed the codec to be H.264. It could be that the MP4s that work are H.264, and the MOVs that don't work are Apple Intermediate Codec.

Although Windows users are on QuickTime 7, Mac users generally are not. Only if you updated from an old version of OS X, and chose to keep QuickTime Player 7 around would you have QuickTime Player 7. Even then I think it would be using QuickTime 10. In the days where the OS X installer was a physical disc, you had QuickTime Player 7 as an optional install, and it would usually be installed into Utilities. It would only be of some use if you own a QuickTime Pro license. I still use QuickTime Player 7 when exporting video, so that I have more control.

A Mac may not have AIC, if the Mac has never had a recent iMovie, or Final Cut Pro. If that's the case you may be able to use this Pro Codecs installer:

But, the fact that Dave's QuickTime could play back his Apple Intermediate codec.mov file was not understood by me if the Apple Intermediate Codec was absent.

                                                            Update

It seems that when I watch a movie clip first before I export to elements 10 using quicktime it converts it first and then I can import and edit with no problem (at time of writing this) But if I import to elements 10 directly from my external hard drive then I cannot. Suggesting that quicktime needs to convert video first.

I then did a test using a Canon DSLR which also used .MOV files and imported directly from the external hard drive to elements 10 but this time there were no problems and the info on the codec was h264.

AAC is the audio codec. The video codec would usually be H.264, though it may be shown as AVC, which could be what you meant to write.

I have seen cases where a video file would not open in some programs, but just opening in QuickTime Player, and doing a Save As, would give a file that worked.

As Colin points out - AAC is an audio compression format. Apple Intermediate Codec is video compression format being used by your problem .mov files. You have written that the files from the Sony with the .mp4 file extension are working OK for you while the .mov are not. The reason for the .mp4 working may relate to whether or not it also uses that Apple Intermediate Codec. It is an important supplemental piece of the information at this point..

Where did you check to find out what video compression that the .mp4 file uses? Colin has already pointed to some video compression possibilities for the .mp4. If it does use Apple Intermediate Codec, you will probably see Video Format = Intermediate Codec and the video codec identified as icod. If it is not using the Apple Intermediate codec, then you look for video compression formats such a those that Colin mentioned. Look for H.264, avi1, MPEG2 AVC/H.264, and the like.

What is the model of the Canon DSLR that you used and did not run into any Apple Intermediate Codec.mov issues. This points us back to the Sony for other look at its recording and the transfer of those files to your Mac computer.
