Web Fonts vs Desktop fonts: Formats and uses
The main difference between a Desktop Font and a Web Font is that the first one is designed to be installed on your computer and is ready for use in applications also installed on your system (like Word, Photoshop, Illustrator…) They usually have a .otf .ttf, or .ps1 extension corresponding with OpenType, TrueType or PostScript.
On the other hand, a Web Font is a font especially designed for use in web pages, and isloaded with CSS @ font-face declaration. This makes the user’s browser downloads web fonts and renders text correctly.
A web font is usually served in four formats, TrueType, WOFF, EOT and SVG. Only with four formats browser compatibility is achieved, as each browser uses a format.
Another very important feature about fonts in web design: web fonts cannot be installed in the system for use in applications, and the same happens in reverse. They have different formats...
There's more, but the main points are found above.
