Indesign 2015 moving my window/workspace on laptop

I'm working in InDesign 2015 CC on a laptop and a monitor. When I open InDesign, my workspace will not move to the monitor unless I break it up into separate pieces and will not consolidate back together. Also InDesign menu stays on the laptop side. The only way I can get the workspace in one piece is to shut my laptop making everything go to the monitor. I then cannot use my laptop as a second window. I do not have this problem with Photoshop. Is there a way I can get this setup the way I want it?
