Empty the contents of the clipboard in Word and try again.

the clipoboard is empty. It still doesn't work.
i would give the ol' reboot a try and see if that takes care of the problem

Rebooting will not help. This is a Fireworks only problem not a system problem. This system has been restarted numerous times since the problem first showed up.

1) Are you sure you haven't reset FW keyboard shortcuts so pasting is no
longer triggered by the shortcut it used to? Did you try doing it via menu
and what happened?
2) Are you sure you're pasting into the document, not just plain FW

Let me back up a bit here. What version of FW and OS are you using ..

I am having the same problem. I am using Fireworks MX 2004 on Windows XP. Cannot paste Print Screen / Clipboard contents.
I've seen this in the past. Sometimes it is an OS problem, not Fireworks! (I've seen this on Windows XP and Fireworks.)
Press Print Screen button, then open a new blank Fireworks document, and try Edit > Paste menu. It should work. If it doesn't, reboot Windows, try again.
Check if this works in other programs, as well! Press Print Screen button, then paste in IrfanView, see if it works.
Print Screen works perfectly on my side -- WinXP and Fireworks CS3 and CS4 work fine! Maybe there's some other problem on your system?...
You do need an open document to paste into, though. If you have no document open, press Ctrl-N to create a new one (FW should read the dimensions from the clipboard), press Enter to select the preloaded dimensions, then press Ctrl-V.
You are right: print screen > ctrl+N in Fireworks > a new document with exact screen dimensions opens > ctrl+V (paste the screen), done!
It seems to be working now after a system restart, so I'm thinking this was a windows problem and not fireworks.
Yes, I've seen this on Windows. Fireworks is not involved in this case, I think
