    Optimizing Speed (Web vs. Intranet)

I'm developing a rather large project, and our network connections are locally relatively fast, but many of our users are in another area of town. That said, their off-site connection to our server here is a lot slower.

I'd initially had the project optimized for Local PC or Intranet. After testing the off-site machines and noticing the slug-like response of the project, I changed the optimization to Web Site. The published project still has the exact same amount of files as before, so I'm wondering what portion of the project becomes a higher number of smaller files (Web Site), as opposed to a lower number of larger files (Intranet).

Is there anything else I can look into for making the response faster?
