- Is is possible that you are not in the recent catalog.
- Open Lightroom
- Go to preferences - performance and uncheck use graphics processor
- Restart LR and see if images appear fine.
- For missing images check this link - https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/help/locate-missing-photos.html
Thank you for the input, but I am in the correct catalog and unchecking the graphics card made no difference. I know how to locate missing file in LR, however they are truly missing from Explorer. Furthermore, besides missing files are being converted to JPG. (I use CR2) The only jpgs I have are imported from other people. Also, I get the message 'could not be located. Each file can only be associated with one photo.'
I'm stumped and don't know where to turn.

There should be a missing-image exclamation-point badge on the thumbnails.
If the files are missing in Explorer then they have been deleted or moved outside of LR. LR doesn’t store images, it only remembers where they were located when imported. If you’ve moved or deleted them outside of LR that’s not something LR or Adobe or anyone else can help you with other than suggesting how to find them if they’ve only been moved and not deleted.
Have you searched your entire hard-drive(s) for them? If the images were on an external drive then maybe the drive letter or device name changed? Do you have any backups of the original image files?
Regarding the blurriness, normally, when the image exists, LR will compute a full-resolution screen view from the image itself, but in your situation there are no original images, anymore, so only the lower-resolution preview is available.
Hello again, ssprengel,
This is what happened and I don’t know why - Lightroom has changed the file names on many of my files, even the original raw capture so they display an exclamation mark. Of course, LR cannot locate the file until I manually find it in Explorer and select it. Then everything is OK.. This has not happened on all files but on most of them. Yesterday, I updated from LR 6.2.1 CC to LR 6.3 CC. Weird. Any other suggestions for me? I appreciate your problem solving with me. Thank you, Mike
PS: an example: In LR: !Sombrero_Sat_FromLaurie-2-934.CR2 changed from Sombrero_FromLaurie-8288.CR2 in Explorer.

LR doesn't change the name of files unless you use the Rename command in LR, but if you do that it renames the files on disk as well as the filenames in the location it remembers, so there wouldn't be a missing file.
I don't know what you did but somehow the names don't match between what's stored in the catalog and on disk. If you used LR to rename the files, then opened an older backup catalog before you didn't the rename, then the current name of the disk files wouldn't match the old name stored in LR. Another possibility is that you've imported the files into two different LR catalogs, and used Rename or Move each time so the files end up with new names or a new place in the second catalog as compared to the original catalog.
