I work for an engineering software company and I'm creating some marketing videos for our software that will go on YouTube (they are MP4 format). These are to be quick videos that show a user how to do something in less than 2 minutes. We'd like to put a countdown timer layer on the video and have it start counting down maybe 10-15 seconds after the video has started. How can this be done in After Effects?
Again, we want the timer to be able to be displayed on top of our video as it is in progress, and we need the time delay such that the timer does not start counting until we tell it to start counting in the video.
You don't need to do it in After Effects. Get any countdown video you want (or create it yourself in After Effects) and then use Premiere Pro (or whatever video editor you use) to put it in the video where you want it. It will be a lot faster than doing it in AE. You could trim it to start at whatever time you needed too.
The Effect>Text>Numbers effect would be a good place to start for creating a countdown in AE.
Creating the timer is easy unless you want it to be interactive. If you are new to AE you will need to spend a couple of hours learning the basics. I would probably use Dan Ebbert's universal counter:
