Track matte not working right in latest upgrade.

I'm attempting to put a drop shadow on a layer that is using a track matte.  Same as always.  Only now, no shadow shows up no matter what type of matte I do, or what type of object I use to create the matte.

When I pre-comp the graphics, it then lets me put a drop shadow on it.

(wondering now if I always had to do that and just completely had a brainlock, or if this is still a glitch)

The track matte gets applied after effects in the rendering pipeline so, your wondering is correct; you've always had to precompose.

Now, if you use the Set Matte effect instead of setting a track matte, you could apply the drop shadow with no precomp, but that doesn't always have the desired result if the layer sizes are different.
