User error (me). It is not presently possible to replace a shape layer with footage.
I was confusing a shape layer with a solid (after using camera tracking).
As for #2, above:
It is working now by using the keyboard shortcut: Cmd, Opt, /
I'm not sure why the Option key + Drag method doesn't work (Option key works everywhere else),
but I won't argue with success.
I'm on a Mac, and I'm simply wanting to replace footage by using the process of selecting the layer, and then Option dragging the new footage onto the name of the layer. It worked earlier, but now in AE CS6, CC, and CC 2014:
1- If I have a Shape Layer, the new footage being dragged causes an error "After Effects error: layer does not have a source. ( 26 :: 335 )" pictured here: http://postimg.org/image/tyh38uuu5/).
2- If I use a graphic as the first layer, and then replace with another graphic, it doesn't replace. It just gets added as a new layer.
Lots of troubleshooting already… I even went so far as to uninstall CC 2014 and then reinstall it, obviously with no luck. My Google-Fu may be weak, as I wasn't able to find a solution that way. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Glad to hear it, Benjamin!
This really needs to be FIXED Adobe. I need to be able to replace shape layers just like any other source, there has to be a way.
it's not a fix because this is native vector layer of Ae and how it has always been and documented. shapes and text do not have a source. if you want them to have one, you can try ask for it here: Feature Request/Bug Report Form
I submitted a request, it's just proven to be a huge pain because I was given a project where they were using hundreds of shape layers that had to be replaced by a singular precomp that was using the same shape layer but with additional changes. I wound up having to manually replace each one, copy and paste keyframes, etc. There needs to be some math in place so that shape layers can be replaced like other non-generative options, perhaps with preflight options for how the new layer is transformed to fit.
I am having a similar issue with "After Effects error: layer does not have a source. ( 26 :: 335 )". I am using a Motion Array template and when dragging the video or photo files over the video/image file i get this error message.
Not sure how to resolve this could you please drop me line if you're able to help.
