Try using the validate form function form the behaviors panel and apply it
to your submit so that it will check upon submit. Of course this relies on
best way would be to validate at the server level, but this will work fine

Attach a Validate Form Behavior to the Submit button for the form. If you select Required, then the form will not submit until they enter something into the field. For text fields, you can specify to validate for the user having entered numbers.

I recommend you atach the Behavior to the Submit button (onClick event) rather than the individual form field less annoying to the user. Also, Did you check the Required checkbox on the Validate Form dialog box for the field in question?
