I'm planning to purchase a bunch of iMacs with 256GB internal SSD. The plan is to have all of the media on external drives, and only use the 256GB SSD for the OS and applications, including Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.
1. Does After Affects need/use a certain % of space on a drive/SSD to perform optimally?
2. Do the accumulated temp files, render files, etc. from After Effects end up taking much space?
3. Are there any issues with placing the temp files, render files, etc. from After Effects on external drives?
You want normally atleast 40 to 60GB on a drive preferably an SSD drive. When AE utilizes the majority of ram it will write what is currently in ram to the AE disk cache and flush the active ram. So you want allot of space if you have it and definitely an SSD. I would suggest 128GB SSD drive if just AE cache and 256GB+ for AE cache and Media Cache. Yes AE leaves some cache files so you will have to clean them at times. External drives have a higher latency so no I would not recommend it unless they are Thunderbolt drives.
