    Can a SWF read posts?

    foq
Hello. I hope you can, once again, help me with this one:

I want to make a swf that can read (and display) random posts from a website made with drupal, geeklog or joomla (I'll choose whatever content manager works better with flash). Is that possible? Can you give any pointers?

      Thanks a lot.

          Sure.

Yes. Flash supports XML, so if this site uses RSS (for example) to make
posts available, you could read in that RSS (which is XML) and display it
however you like. Even if your CMS doesn't support RSS, it makes its data
available in text format, and that's all you need.

As for pointers ... well, this could potetentially require a significant
volume of custom code. The approach you decide to take in Flash will depend
on the version of ActionScript you're using. You've posted to the
ActionScript 1.0/2.0 forum, so is that your range? (In other words, no
          ActionScript 3.0?)

Hello David, thanks a lot for your help.

The RSS idea is a good one. It would probably prevent me from displaying older content, but I could give up on that, for ease's sake.

About which ActsionScript version: whichever is easier. I have more familiarity with ActionScript 1.0 / 2.0, so that would be my first option. However, as I should upgrade my license soon, ActionScript 3.0 would be great. What would you recommend?

            Again, thanks a lot!

AS1/2 could certainly do it, but XML is more frustrating to navigate
prior to AS3. AS3 supports something called E4X (EcmaScript for XML), which
makes the data in XML significantly easier to access and manipulate.

Ultimately, it depends on what version of Flash Player you want to
support. If you're comfortable requiring your users to have Flash Player 9
or higher, then go for AS3, by all means. Doing so will truly make your job
              easier.

Ok, I'll try ActionScript 3 then. Thanks a lot!
