You should only drag from Finder or Bridge, not from the desktop. What happens if you use File > Place... instead?
Dragging from Desktop is the same as dragging from finder as the desktop is part of the finder.
But what is the content? What is the file type? What is the color space?
Or did you drag from an open file to InDesign? From which program?
Since when? I've been dragging assets from the desktop since InDesign 2.0. The desktop is actually a Finder layer, so it IS dragging from Finder.
Does it work if you place the image with File > Place?
Is the image the JPG on the left?
It might simply be a graphics memory glitch. You've got InDesign, Safari, and Mail open in addition to a few background applications shown in the app bar. Try dragging the image in, and, even if it's black, save the document. Quit InDesign and restart the computer. When you reopen the INDD, does the image appear or is it still black? How about if you change the document display quality to typical and/or high?
