Are you opening a backup catalog?
Opening/Importing edited images will not show the adjustments in Lightroom.Only catalog stores these changes.
No I had just imported some of the older edited images from a folder on the new hard drive. If I launch a backup catalog dated before my old hard drive failed will I retrieve the files with the adjustments? Will I lose newer folders, collections and adjustments that I have added since I started using my new hard drive?
All of your adjustments are stored in the catalog, they are not applied or attached to the image files. If you reimported images then they are new images and the editing process starts all over. If you have backup catalog that you can use that would be a good choice because all of the adjustments that were made while using that catalog will be applied to the images.
Will using that backup catalog affect images adjusted later than that catalog? In other words will I lose my adjustments on current photos backed up on a newer back up catalog?
The older backup of the catalog will be missing any photos that were added after the backup is made. You now have two catalogs, one with the edits on the older files and one with newer edits. You need to merge the two.
Give this a try:
- Copy/unzip the old backup catalog to a new folder.
- Open this catalog. Verify that all your old edits are still there.
- Merge this catalog with your newer catalog using the "import from catalog" feature by selecting your new catalog where you imported new files into.
- Select the new files to be imported; do not import the old files you already have edits for.
