    Black text on grey background

I'm working on a book that's being printed in only one color (black). It includes some graphic images that I've had to redraw to suit the one-color print. In order to tell different elements apart I have a number of swatches with varying tint of black, and many of them have black text in them. How dark a grey can I have without risking that the black becomes too unclear? I'm using as much as 50% black on the darkest elements that also contain black text. Changing the text to white is not possible for these, because the text spans over adjacent elements with lighter shades of grey.

The text in these elements is slightly unclear when printed on a regular printer. The book will be printed with offset print however, is that going to make a difference? Any general guidelines for this kind of issue?
