It's a problem in the most recent version of AE... or is it a bug? I forget.
But if you get AE CC 2014 -- which you can -- I recommend using it instead, especially if you're new. Here's a link to get it:

That's not how it works. Unless you're using the tryout version, you're on the hook to Adobe each and every month until you cancel. 30 days after that, any Adobe products you've been renting automatically deactivate. So you can use the 2014 version until... well, when your 30 day tryout period ends or when you cancel, if you're renting. The same thing applies to the 2015 version.
