Lightroom keeps creating an empty folder under "Volumes" and pointing catalog to folder (OS X El Capitan)

For the past couple of weeks, I've had a strange behavior in Lightroom CC.  I keep my Lightroom catalog on my laptop hard drive and my images on an external drive.  Every couple of days or so when I connect my external to work with some images, I get the message that the images can't be found.  My external drive has the green light in Lightroom, so it is seeing the drive.  When I right click to locate a folder, I find that I now have a folder under my Volumes in addition to the external drive.  Lightroom thinks my images should be in this new folder.  The name of the folder is exactly the same as the name of the external drive.  I can "find" the images by pointing each folder to the proper place and then delete the unwanted folder and all works well for a day or two before the problem repeats.

Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?  I'm using OS X El Capitan.

Thanks in advance for any help!
