I am using the latest version of indesign and Mac OS X, this problem is happpening frequently, I create a file, save and package the links and fonts, the program quits and I am unable to open the original or the idml file in the packaged folder. Indesign is not saving a back up, I get the message file may be damaged > then Document contains an invalid frame.
I spoke with support today but they said it is a file issue, am getting frustrated!
Something is corrupted, but look into the IDML file. Sometimes it is possible to repair it there. Such frames could not only be text or image frames, also page, layer, crop are here found as frame. But it requires some knowledge how InDesign files work.
I'm pretty sure this is caused by a bug. I've been looking back through other reports without finding a fix or known trigger, and TEXT FRAME CRASHES INDESIGN has a post implying that Adobe has acknowledged the bug and the files are unrecoverable.
There seem to be fewer reports of this in CC 2014 than CC 2015, so you might want to step back a version (How to Find and Install Previous Version of Adobe Apps in CC 2015 | Adobe Customer Care Team), but the bug has been around since at least CS4.
