Why is LR applying a sepia tone to b&w conversion?

When I convert to b&w by clicking Black & White in the 'treatment' section beneath the histogram, I am getting an image that looks toned. It is not properly greyscale, it is warm, like sepia. After some investigation, I've discovered that LR is applying a custom RGB tone curve, so I can remove this sepia colour cast by changing the tone curve to linear, medium or high contrast. My question is why is this happening in the first place? In the preferences panel I have switched off "apply auto mix when first converting to b&w" but this is still happening - shouldn't I be able to turn it off somewhere? Thanks in advance for any insights...
