    'FILE NOT FOUND" questions..

    LynetteCas

      Hello.

I asked for assistance a bit before the holidays about some LR files being 'not found' in develop mode.  A few people were kind to try and help me.

None of the ways worked for my situation, unfortunately.

Just was on 'chat' with Adobe.

Still have not gotten it fixed. Looks like I'm going to have to start from scratch.

BUT, is it true that if you have more than one external HD plugged in, that LR gets confused and can do bizarre things with your files?

It was suggested to just upload all of my photos into my computer and access the files/LR from there. I did this before and my disc was exploding with files. Over 113K in a short time)

I have been uploading all the RAW files into an external H.D.  I've never had trouble before. Suddenly it doesn't work.... but only occasionally...it's so weird.

      Thanks.

Not true at all. And Lightroom never does bizarre things to your images, and it only does things to your images that you specifically tell Lightroom to do.

On Windows computers, the drive letters can change causing the database to be looking in the wrong spot for your photos and results in "missing photos"; this is easily fixed.

I don't know what your exact situation is, how big of a mess your catalog is, but this seems like a last resort. If it was someone at Adobe that told you that, the person is just plain giving bad advice. Terrible advice. Your photos are fine on external HDs, and there's no real need to put them on internal HDs (unless you really want to).

but you're not going to give us details? We need details if we are going to help you.

Well, I uploaded a wedding in October...

Wait.  This was SUPPOSED to be Adobe. I wonder if I didn't get a dangerous knockoff!?!? UGH!  I allowed them to access my computer!!! Cripes!!!!

            Could this happen!?!?

I thought this all sounded bizarre.

When you chat with them, should it say  "Bomgar support customer client/adobe.com"   ???  I didn't THINK that sounded right..and the person I was chatting with had a different name in the access to my computer part.

Then I THINK they were in the 'downloads'  of my computer, not in LR... but I thought maybe I just accidentally went over it and opened it myself.

              I'm really nervous now.

Sorry.  I figured that out about the access.  I panicked. Never mind..

Basically, the information I was given by Adobe is pretty much not true?  You CAN have two hard drives plugged into the computer and LR should not get so easily confused?

Lightroom can handle multiple (more than 2) external HDs without problem.

That's what I thought!!!  LR should easily handle that.  That sounded totally bunk to me.  This is why I thought the person helping me earlier today was am imposter.   That's why I panicked. That person had access to my computer.

I have been reading story after story in these forums of completely wrong things allegedly said by Adobe phone and chat support. I keep thinking I should make a list of the most terrible wrong things allegedly said. The things that have been reported are shocking in their wrongness.

Well, that guy was totally OFF.  Telling me that I cannot have more than 1 external HD because LR gets too confused!! Whaaat?!?    I was literally on the phone for two hours with the guy and it was a 150% waste of my time..which I do not have to waste.

I called back and got another guy.  He was a different 'dept'.  Upgrading and such.  Not a tech specialist.

I upgraded to LR 6.7 I guess it is and 'CC'.  There is no '6.7' at the top of my screen but, okay.    I edited 232(out of 736) photos which I need to deliver 'yesterday'.  As I was moving along I clicked the grey 'dot' on the thumbnail and added them to a 'quick collection', as I have been doing for about three years now.   From there I export the quick collection out at 300ppi to my external HD.  So, I tried to export a few hours ago and NONE of the files went!!! What is going on!?!?!

I haven't got time to sit thru a bunch of tutorials!!

I've had nothing but trouble the past few weeks and I don't know what's going on!!!

Three years with very little trouble and now this.  Aggh!

I don't know how to do this, but you should report your story to Adobe (I don't know how or to whom), pointing out that the answer you received was 100% wrong.

                            LR 6.3? or Lightroom 5.7?

You have probably (accidentally?) set another collection as the target and so clicking on the grey dot puts the photos in the target collection, instead of the quick collection. You can right-click on the Quick Collection to reset it as the target.

You don't have time to sit through a bunch of tutorials? I think that you don't have time to NOT sit through the tutorials, as you would be better off than wasting time as you have been doing recently.

                                Hello.

Thanks for trying to help me again.

I do think it's LR 6.3.  I did get the 'export' issue resolved.  I think I miss-typed in a box and put a comma in that wasn't supposed to be there.  Something so simple, as usual. Once I caught and corrected that, the files exported just fine. They were definitely in the 'quick collection'.

My biggest issue is that I'm usually moving TOO FAST.  I have too many things happening at once.

I completely agree.  I need to watch the tutorials. Already started the ones pertaining to CC.  The issue was I needed to get those photos out right then.  I was already late. I couldn't sit and watch videos at THAT MOMENT.   I'm self-taught all the way... all I've done is watch tutorials. LOL Constantly.

I've not tried again to locate the missing files in my HD yet.   Due again, to lack of time.

I'll get back to them very soon..    thanks so much!

                                  Hi Geoff.  LOL  MVP...

*I have two drives. Both Seagates.

                                  *Apple.  I have an iMac.

*I just upgraded from LR5.  LR5 is where the albums started to 'disappear' randomly.

*On Friday I upgraded via phone and a tech-guy at Adobe to I'm assuming LR 6.3.  I just see 'Adobe LR CC" in the top left hand side where I usually see the version, so I'm not entirely sure.

While still in LR 5,  most of the albums were there and okay. Only a few totally random ones seemed to go 'poof!" and disappear.  They were there but had a " ?"  in the library.  TWO of those albums that I needed to finish up and send off to a bride and groom, like, 'yesterday'. She was waiting for them. I was in a panic.

I could see them in the library mod but when I when to develop it said 'File cannot be found'.   BUT... NOT 'File is missing or offline'.

I'm guessing there is a difference.

I'm 150%  self-taught and not very adventurous with LR.  I use what I know and rarely try anything new, which is not good.  Not learning if you're not making mistakes, right?  I've just been so busy with both shooting and other things in life that I got in a rut of sticking with the very familiar and safe. Things change and I panic!!!!

I got my 'export' issue resolved.  I had a comma in a box where no comma should be, and I think that's why the files would not export.  They were definitely in the 'quick collection' and went just fine both at 300pi and sent them o over again at 120ppi with a watermark added for sharing.

                                  Thanks so much!!! Lynette

I'm having the same issue as Lynette.  I store all my photos on an external hard drive, the same one I've used since getting Lightroom over a year ago.  All photos show in Library, but when I go to 'Develop' mode, I get a "File Cannot Be Found" on some photos, other photos are just fine.  If I try and 're-import' the file that cannot be found, I cannot do so because I'm getting a "Photo appears to be a duplicate" message.  Very frustrating.

I use a Mac, have not updated any software programs recently.  This just started happening out of the blue yesterday.  Anyone else having this issue and a possible fix?

                                      Thanks ~

I'm having the same issue as Lynette. I store all my photos on an external hard drive, the same one I've used since getting Lightroom over a year ago. "File cannot be found" means Lightroom cannot find the photo. It is not in the location that LR expects it to be in. This happens because you have moved renamed or deleted the photo outside of LR; on Windows it can also mean that your drive letter has changed.

IMPORTING WILL NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

You have to find the photo in LR and reconnect it using these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

The problem is that Lightroom says the photos aren't where it thinks they should be, even though you state you haven't moved renamed or deleted. In this case, it doesn't matter what you think, Lightroom wins the argument, and until you can figure out why Lightroom thinks the photos are not present in the expected location, you will not make progress here.

Just Shoot Me Adobe Community Professional

In my experience with LR, from version one some 9+ years ago, LR does not lose track of images that are imported into the catalog. If LR is saying the File is not found then someone, something, somehow moved or deleted that image file and or the drive the file is supposed to be on is starting to fail and the files contained on it are being corrupted.

Take one of the missing file names and do a search in the File Manager for your OS to see if it is still on that drive.

I will, however, hit the link you sent to see if that will solve the issue. Thanks for sending that.

Can you post a screen shot showing the Library like this......
