I decided to simply and make more uniform the titles for all my folders that are housed in a single catalogue. That involves renaming some of them. Goal is to make them easier to locate as there are 10,000's of files involved.
Now of course I have many edits either in progress (XMP's) or those that are complete.
How do I get LR 5.7.1 to recognize the folders (containing the pictures and associated edits) name changes so that everything stays where it should be and remain together?
I hope the above makes sense.
Any enlightenment and instruction is appreciated as I don't want to accidently lose pictures in the process.

I would suggest you to rename the folder and files in Lightroom. It will make the changes automatically in your file explorer.
Let me know if this helps.
The easiest approach would have been to do the folder renaming inside of Lightroom's Folder panel.
Otherwise, use the Folders panel to right-click and "find missing" or some such option.
If your tree view in the Folders panel does not look like what Finder/Explorer shows you, right-click "show parent" as often as needed.
