    need technical advice on HDD

    Nooday

      Hello friends,

I will buy a new PC and I need your help on two questions.

      Question 1:

I need an I7 processor for mounting 4K with the Twixtor plugin and Colorista III

      I must make a choice between I7 5930k or I7 5960X.

      after the test PassMark: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

      their performance are substantially similar.

you think the I7 5930K enough?

      Question 2:

      HDD configuration

the new SSD 950 Pro, is a speed monster, I aimarais know what you think of this configuration:

      - 256GB SSD 850 PRO: Windows 10 + Software

      - 2 X 850 PRO 256GB SSD RAID 0: Cache & Media Previews

      - 500GB SSD 950 PRO: Media & projects & Exports

      the rest of my configuration:

      32GB DDR 4

      GTX 980ti

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

            1. Depends on the threading capabilities of your plugins. If they thread lousy, the 5930 is OK, if they thread good, the 5960 is the preferred one.
            2. Sounds OK.
            3. The GTX 980Ti is overkill for Premiere Pro sec. If your plugins use the video card extensively, it is OK. If they hardly use the video card, you may as well throttle down to a 970.

For the impact of the video card, see Tweakers Page - What video card to use

I would not bother putting those two 850 Pro's into a RAID 0 array.  You are not going to see any advantage running Premiere over a single one.  And personally I leave the Media Cache and Media Cache Files in the default position on the boot SSD and put the Preview files on the Samsung 950 Pro drive which is so much faster.  This is on my X99 i7-5960X.which is the current fastest Premiere Pro BenchMark (PPBM) system, you will have to register on the site to see the results.

thank you for your answers, but I believe that you disagree on the HDD configuration

                RameezKhan agrees with this:

                - 256GB SSD 850 PRO: Windows 10 + Software

                - 2 X 850 Pro SSD 256GB RAID 0: Cache & Media Previews

                - 500GB SSD 950 PRO: Media & Projects & Exports

but this is what proposes "Bill Gehrke" (if I understood correctly?)

                - 256GB SSD 850 PRO: Windows 10 + Software +

                - 850 Pro SSD 256GB RAID 0: Cache

                - 500GB SSD 950 PRO: Previews & Digital Media & Projects & Exports

you advise me which SSD configuration?

about the graphics card I agree with you, but I work too much on photoshop, lightroom, after-effects, Cinema 4D, 3D elemend

that's why I chose the gtx 980TI is just to have the margin

                thanks for your help

i believe this is what bill proposes:

                  - 256GB SSD 850 PRO: Windows 10 + Software + Cache

                  - 512GB SSD 950 PRO: Previews & Digital Media & Projects & Exports

if you do not have enough room on the 950 pro for previews and AE disk cache, then you will need another drive to have enough storage space. in that situation your original setup will be fine.

the i7-5820k and 5930k once overclocked are similar speeds, but the 5960x is a fair bit faster with 2 more cores. the broadwell-e 10 core i7-6950x will be an upgrade option for the x99 platform, so you could just go with the 5820k to holdover till then.

Thank you Ronin for correcting that wrong assumption.  There is no performance improvement for Premiere going from one 850 Pro to a RAIDed pair of drives if you needed more room and decide to add the three drive.  I have made several tests on the Media Cache and Media Cache Files and found I could put those folders on an old USB 2 storage drive and could see no difference in performance.

thank you, Ronin and thank you Bill

I have 2 hard drive that could be used:

                      1 X Hitachi 1to 7200tr

                      1 X Vélociraptor 150go 10000tr

it should be good like that?

                      - 256GB SSD 850 PRO: Windows 10 + Software

                      - 1 Hitachi X 1to 7200: Cache

                      - 512GB SSD 950 PRO: Previews & Digital Media & Projects & Exports

                      thank you,

I much prefer the Boot/OS/applications drive to be a standard SATA III like a Samsung 850 Pro and use the Samsung 950 Pro for all the Premiere Pro project files.  Forget about RAID except for archiving and backup.

The total for the above configuration of 15 hard disk drives, 14 SSD's, and 2 Areca disk controllers is $6527!
