Which version of Lightroom are you using?
What error message do you receive while importing that set of NEF files?
Share a screen capture for that error message ?
I'm using LR 5.X.
I didn't receive an error message. I noticed while viewing the "current import" files that several of the original images were missing from the import. The images are on the memory card and can be viewed in the camera viewfinder. The missing image files (both the .nef file and .jpeg copy} were not transferred from the memory card to the external storage drive via the lightroom import. After manually copying the missing image files from the memory card to the external storage drive, I attempted again to import the files with LR. With the LR import window opened and the import source engaged, you can see the frames with the file name indicated but no thumbnail image is visible. Clicking "import" triggers the import action but no files are transferred. I used photoshop to convert a couple of the raw images to both .jpeg and .tiff formats and saved them to the storage drive. Still couldn't import them using LR.
I'm away from my office and unable presently to produce screenshots.
Thanks for your reply and assistance!
It could be possible that those images are already present.
You should do a search for 1-2 of those images in the library module of Lightroom so as to confirm if those images are present or not as if the import process completes and throws no error message, it indicates that the images should have been imported.
Chetna,....None of the files were found using the "find" function in LR. Below are screenshots:

Screenshot #2--.NEF and .JPEG files viewed on the external drive after having done a manual import
Screenshot #3--.NEF and .JPEG files viewed on the external drive prior to import action

Screenshot #6--Non-visible images viewed with LR can be seen when viewed from Adobe Bridge
In the Import dialog, check the contents of your Destination panel and confirm they are set as you want.
The majority of the images from the memory disk included with the problem import were downloaded successfully. Files, thumbnail and metadata are viewable and intact in the LR catalogue. There's one group of images though which were shot during the middle of the photo shoot which are the problem. They weren't imported from the memory disk and even after manually copying them (in Windows Explorer) to the target external photo storage drive, LR recognizes them in the import module (file names are visible but thumbnails are not) but will not import them into the LR catalogue.
Everything seems appropriately set in the destination folder.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Of the files that LR will not show you images for, try viewing them with another image viewer and see if any error message pop up. Having a bunch of files go weird in the middle of the set could be an indication that your memory card is going bad.
