The setting that you found is present in Lightroom 6 and above version.
Does it freeze as you try other folders option under Import settings?
Go to Lightroom Preferences > File handling > increase the camera raw cache to higher end (may be 50-60GB) and then, check.
i increased the camera raw cache to 50 GB - result is unchanged: lightroom freezes as soon as i go to my picture folders.
my pictures (around 1 TB data) are stored on an external HDD which i used already with my old system (the laptop was older, slower, running under Windows 7; the external HDD was linked to the Computer via USB 2.0). Now everything should be faster: New laptop (i7, Windows 10, USB 3.0), same data, same external HDD, same lightroom 5.7.1. But lightroom freezes (everything else works just fine). What else can i try?
resetting the Lightroom Preferences (I followed exactly the description referred to in your advice) did NOT solve the problem.
What else could be tried?
Is this problem on Windows 10 known within the LR community?
The lightroom catalogue I use (and have used exactly the same way in my old system on Windows 7 – with no problem) is big, but not too big – the catalogue file has 400 MB and the pictures files are storec in an archive on the same external HDD (around 30.000 pictures = 600 GB). Should be no problem for Lightroom.
Would suggest you to give full read and write permissions to everyone to the following list of Adobe folders :
- Main folder in which your Lightroom Catalog is stored (By default, it is stored in Pictures\Lightroom)
- C:\Program Files\Adobe
- C:\Program Data\adobe
- C:\users\user name\appdata\Roaming\Adobe
