Which version of Lightroom are you using?
What is file type(format) ?
Where are the Files actually stores in Finder/Explorer?
I am using LR in the creative cloud. The files are png (saved without compressing them) and they are stored on an external hard drive connected to the computer.
This is something you have to change in your operating system, you need to change the permission on the folder that contains the photos to WRITE permission.
Go to your favorite search engine and type in
Change Permissions MAC
Change Permission Windows
Thank you for the information. I tried this and when I go to the properties for each file, it now shows that I have full access to all of my files, however, it still says they are read only in Lightroom. I tried exiting LR and going back in again. Didn't work. I even tried restarting the computer and trying again and it still doesn't work.
Individual files can be marked as "read only" in your operating system. In Windows, you would right-click on a photo file and select Properties and then uncheck Read Only.
I had not seen that before. I tried this. Still doesn't work. I also thought maybe if I have unclicked read only, it would help if I remove the picture from the catalog and import it again now that it has this saved. But that did not help either. Thanks for trying!
Show us a screen capture of the permissions on the folder.
Show us a screen capture of the read-only flag of one of these files.
Show us a screen capture of the error message.
Correct answer found thanks to dj_paige! When I went to get a screen capture of the folder permissions, I found that although in security, I had changed it so I had full access, the general tab for the parent folder was still marked read only. After un-checking read only on the parent folder, and applying it the folder and over 1000 subfolders, it is finally letting me save the metadata! Huge thank you!!! For everyone with this problem, I would start by right clicking the parent folder to all your picture files, in general tab, un-check read only and then if that doesn't work change the permissions for different people on your computer. I'm all for keeping the most control you can and giving up control as a last resort! Again, thank you dj_paige for walking me through this. You were very helpful!
