AfterEffects and Audition won't recognize my speakers.

I'm using a set of first generation Harmon Kardon Soundsticks - USB, which have served me well for many years, and which work fine with all other applications on my mac.

BUT I can't get them to play sound for AfterEffects CC 2015 or Audition CC 2015.

iMac 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7

      OSX 10.9.5

AfterEffects: They don't even show up as an option under preferences/audio hardware.

Audition: They show up as 'SoundSticks (Not Working) and give an error message: The sample rate is not supported by the current audio device

I'm reduced to using the iMac's built-in speakers to preview sound for our animation projects, which is less than optimal.

Very grateful for your help and ideas!
These are great speakers, and I'd love to get them working for output.
