    V12 DB xtra V3.4

    Level 7
Anyone with V12 DB xtra from Integration New Media, please help...

I was told by tech support at INM that the registration of the xtra is
stored in the database file ONLY not in Director and not in the xtra. I
registered the xtra ran the movie in authoring mode as INM suggested, saw
the size the the db file increase slightly and then ran the projector. No
splash screen as I had been seeing when the xtra wasn't registered.

So I sent the files off for testing and the tester on a different machine
was getting the splash screen. I checked my machine and still, no splash
screen. So I gave the tester the reg code and he registered his db file in
Director. When he ran the projector, voila, no splash screen. He moved the
files to another computer and the splash screen was back. INM insists that
the only place the registration is done is in the .db file so they have been
of no help explaining this behavior.

any clues? anyone run into this before?

Gremlin activity seems to have been abnormally high over your way
recently, but that's the only unifying factor I've been able to discern.

You hit the nail on the head.

Sean or anyone else who's interested in seeing how screwed up the software
              business is.

I created a fresh database for my project and registered the db file. The
              V12 splash screen didn't come up...perfect.
Just for the heck of it, I created a fresh db and DIDN'T register it. No
              splash screen!

It APPEARS that the registration is not just stored in the db file as I've
been told over and over but that there's some connection to having the
authoring environment where the xtra has been registered and running the
files from a projector on that computer, wheter D is open in authoring or
              not.

So I sent the REGISTERED db file to my tester and it ran on both of his
PC's, one where Director was installed and one where it wasn't installed.

I think my contact at INM just doesn't really know how the V12 xtra really
              works.

But we're not getting the trial version splash screen anymore so although
I'm curious why I'm getting this strange behavior, the problem seems to be
              solved.

I'm pretty sure that the registration status is stored on the authoring
machine. Once any database is registered, then the xtra will continue
to be registered, regardless of which db you are using.

It is also possible (to explain the issue you saw) that your original db
was made unregistered, and so unless you remove it and re-add it after
registration, it may maintain the unregistered-ness.

                Or something like that.

Yeah, that's been my experience with any sort of tech support because I used to work in that industry. It doesn't matter how much knowledge they have, if they're providing any sort of customer service then they're not the programmer and that means they don't know how it works under the hood other than what they've been told which is never the full - and complicated - story.
