Could you please let me know the Model of the Camera that you are using to import the images in Lightroom ?
Please describe the symptoms in a lot more detail. What happens when you try to import? If there is an error message, please quote the complete exact unedited word-for-word error message, leaving nothing out changing not a single word.
Canon 5d shooting raw. When importing converting to DNG. Whether trying to import from my desktop or ext. drive this msg appears.

This means that the folder you are trying to copy the photos into does not have WRITE permission.
So, go into your operating system, change the permissions on this folder to WRITE. -- OR -- change the folder to someplace that does have WRITE permission
It seems that you do not have Read and Write access on the location.
Try changing the location of import or give Read and Write access to the folder where you are trying to import the images.
You were right but problem yet to be solved. I went to my hard drive, permissions were read only. I changed it to read and write and then restarted the computer. However when I rechecked the hard drive permissions it still indicated a read only status. I use Mac OS 10.10.5
Where are you trying to import the images to , to an external drive ?
The permissions on the hard drive are not the permissions we are asking you to change.
You need to change the permissions on the exact folder you are trying to copy the photos into.
I've tried importing from the camera card and it fails.
I've copied the files from the camera card to the Desktop on my iMac and then tried import to LR and it fails.
I've used Adobe DNG Converter app to convert the .ARW to .DNG that works but still won't import into LR.
I've tried to import .JPG from my HD into LR but that fails too.
THey all import into Photoshop ver 126.96.36.1998 camera raw Okay.
You need to provide yourself the Read and Write access on that particular folder where you want to import the images in Lightroom.
