Make sure you do not have it detect faces on everything. Next to your name (or the Lightroom logo) in the top left corner there is a little triangle. Click it and make sure that face detection is paused. Also, try whether turning graphic card acceleration off in Preferences->Performance helps. Counterintuitively having it on tends to slow down many machines.
That said, do realize that Lightroom is not a lightweight program and running fans on laptops is pretty common if you do a lot of heavy editing or when you're exporting a lot of images (or generating previews on them)

I have paused the face detect.
I finally found where I could change the Preferences only to find out that this option is not available to me.
My fan goes crazy as soon as I launch Lightroom.
Frustrated as editing is very slow and the effects of my changes are very slow in being displayed. :-(
Do you have any antivirus software enabled? Check in your process monitor
(ctrl-alt-delete) what process is using all the computer CPU.
