InDesign's 'open recent documents' lists old files

The documents under "Open Recent" lists InDesign files I haven't opened in ages and are by no definition "recent." Nothing current will appear in the list no matter what I try -- I've changed the number of documents I want to show under the preferences menu, regularly delete com.adobe.InDesign.plist from the application preferences, restart the program, blah blah blah. The document list remains unchanged. How can I force it to get rid of defunct documents and find the current documents I want access to? I've gone through forums and have found nothing about this specifically. I'm using CS6 on a Mac, OS 10.6.8. I'll be grateful for any tips to resolve this. Thank you!
