Please follow the below steps.
Go to Lightroom Preferences from the Edit menu
Click on Performance tab
Uncheck the Graphics Processor

Thanks for the suggestion, Mohit, but unfortunately the same thing happens: stops halfway, the dreaded spinning wheel, force quit required.

Unfortunately, Mohit, that doesn't help. I am familiar with the link you attached... it is related to problems discussed two years ago and it seems disappointing and surprising that Adobe has not solved this problem yet, and the many other similar ongoing problems to do with uploading to Blurb. I had explored all of the issues reported on different forums and tried all the suggested "fixes" and "work arounds" but to no avail.
After reporting it to Blurb Support they responded very quickly to my problem saying that it was obviously an Adobe problem and advised me to export the book as a PDF file and then use the uploader on their website. Whilst this is a solution it is not the seamless process promised by Lightroom!
