Clicking a paragraph style, getting a change in character style instead

CS4 on a Mac. I've placed a Word file. I want to start clicking on items and applying paragraph styles. However, when I attempt to do that, what is happening instead is that InDesign is applying a character style that I didn't ask for. Here is a screen shot, hope that it helps.

      Before I click anything.

With the cursor on the "Hemorrhagic strokes" line, I then click on "Green" under Paragraph Styles. This is what happens:

To be clear: nothing from the "Green" paragraph style is being implemented. And the "Green" paragraph style is not based on the "Orange (replaces Tq)" Character style.

I've tried others, and same result - no matter what I chose from the Paragraph styles, what is actually applied is the ""Orange (replaces Tq)" Character style.".
