    FAST Laptop for running Lightroom?

    DavePinMinn Level 1

Well, y'all, it's that time again...  Yes, the periodic question of "WHAT laptop do I need THIS TIME so Lightroom will run 'adequately'?"

We just photographed a cat show last weekend.  The portraits are done with a Nikon D810 (yes, 36 megapixel) tethered to the laptop.  Needless to say, my 3-4 year-old Toshiba Qosmio with an I7-720 is NOT even REMOTELY adequate.  It's take anywhere from 20 to 40 seconds to get a new image to fully load, which means waiting that long to see what the image ACTUALLY looks like.  Not a thing to make clients happy...  This is an18 inch, 16GB laptop with 256 GB SSD for O/S, applications, LR catalog, cache, and so on.  It's just outlived it's capability to handle Lightroom.

Clearly, I need a MUCH, MUCH faster laptop that's still reasonably priced.  I've found several units, a couple with 17" screens.  They appear to be using EITHER the i7-6700HQ at 2.6 GHz or the Intel i7-4710HQ at 2.5 GHz.

I'm looking for ideas on what will provide the most bang for the buck and significantly improve performance.  Do I go I7-6700, I7-4710, or some other direction?  Ideas?

I'll throw a reply in here to my own question...  After <mumble, mumble, a whole lot of> hours of rummaging and reading information, I THINK I've got 3, 17 inch boxes that would work:

          ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 i7-6700HQ, 16GB 2133 DDR4, 1TB 7200 HDD, 128GB M.2 SSD, GTX960M 4GB  - $1250

          MSI GE72 Apache Pro-003  i7-6700HQ, 16GB 2133 DDR4, 1TB 7200 HDD, 256GB M.2 SSD, GTX960M 2GB - $1300

          Alenware 17+     i7-6700HQ, 16GB 2133 DDR4, 1TB 7200 HDD, 256GB PCIe SSD, GTX970M 3GB - $1724 (there are discounts on the 17+), and a 10% discount on all boxes - so final number SHOULD be around $1550

Question:  For Lightroom and Photoshop and Helicon and such, is the Alienware box worth 20+% MORE than the ASUS ROG or MSI boxes?  Any other 17 inch boxes that would provide equivalent specs and prices?  I removed the Acer Predator 'cause it only has a 128GB SSD and runs $1500.

Never mind.  Evaluated several machines and selected one.

Which one?  I've had a similar ASUS ROG for a couple of years and like it.
