Error when working with Lightroom: "Could not save because the file is locked."

I'm getting this error message when I open a file from Lightroom in Photoshop and then try to save it back:

"Could not save as “[FileName].tif” because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file. If the problem persists, save the document to a different file or duplicate it in the Finder.

The file is on an external drive, and I'm working on an iMac (late 2015) running El Capitain. I've tried running disk First Aid, enabling root user, and making sure I have the latest version of photoshop installed.

      Any ideas?
